Verily, Those Who Persecute Believing Men and Believing Women [8]

📖 (Tafseer of Ayah 85:10)

🔹 This verse refers to those who tortured and burned the believers in trenches.

✅ Their punishment is 🔥 Hell in the Hereafter and burning fire in this world.
✅ This also applies to disbelievers who harm believers today—they will face 🔥 Hell and torment in the grave.
✅ Those who create mischief among believers will also suffer these punishments.

From this, two rulings emerge:

1️⃣ Repentance is accepted for murder—if an unbeliever kills a believer in war and later accepts Islam, he is not liable for capital punishment or blood money. If a believer kills another believer unjustly, he must either face execution or pay blood money to seek repentance.

2️⃣ Spreading mischief among believers is a grave crime—Islamic scholars should avoid discussing unnecessary matters that may lead to discord. For instance, when rebuilding 🕋 Ka'bah, the Holy Prophet ﷺ involved all Quraysh leaders in carrying the ⚫ Black Stone to prevent conflict.

Ibn-Kathir

Ala-Maududi

(85:10) Surely those who tormented the believing men and the believing women and then did not repent, theirs shall be the chastisement of Hell, and theirs shall be the chastisement of burning.[6]

6. Punishment of burning has been mentioned separately from the torment of Hell because they had burnt the oppressed people to death by casting them into the pits of fire. Probably this will be a different and severer kind of fire from the fire of Hell in which those people will be burnt.

(10) Indeed, those who have tortured[1898] the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire.

[1898]- Or, in this instance, the literal meaning of "burned" is also appropriate.
