4.The Significance of Day and Night

  1. Days and Nights as Markers of Life:

    • Days and nights are a representation of the passage of time and are directly connected to the termination of one’s age. They cause changes in the world, helping us understand the cycles of life, death, and resurrection. Through them, we experience various phases of life, including good health, sickness, prosperity, and adversity.
  2. Allah's Oath on Day and Night:

    • Allah Almighty has taken an oath on the day and night because they reflect the true nature of time and existence. They highlight the transient nature of life and the inevitable changes that each person experiences.
  3. Sufi Interpretation of Day and Night:

    • According to Sufi sages, time spent in the remembrance of Allah is considered "day," while time spent in negligence is "night." For the saints of Allah, the time of expansion (spiritual growth) is their "day," while the time of seizure (spiritual trials) is their "night."
  4. The Special Significance of the Day:

    • The day referred to in the oath is the one that is connected to the sun, symbolizing the worship and devotion of believers. Unlike the worship of infidels and deities, the worship of a believer is aligned with the day, representing enlightenment and guidance.
  5. Worship and Good Deeds:

    • There is a distinction between the generosity and worship of the Holy Prophet.. A good deed performed through the medium of the Holy Prophet is considered an act of worship and is rewarded. Without this connection, the deed remains a habit and does not carry a spiritual reward.

Ala-Maududi

(91:4) and by the night as it envelopes the sun;[2]

2. That is, when the night comes, the sun hides and its light remains hidden throughout the night. This state has been described, saying that the night covers up the sun, for the night actually signifies the sun’s hiding behind the horizon because of which its light cannot reach that part of the earth where the night has fallen.

(4) And [by] the night when it covers [i.e., conceals] it
