The Consequences of Forced Acceptance of Islam

  1. Forced Acceptance of Faith
This verse warns that when hardships such as famine, or other punishments, will be inflicted upon disbelievers, or when believers are granted victory over them, the disbelievers will be forced to accept Islam. However, this acceptance would be out of fear or compulsion rather than genuine belief.

It would be far better for them if they accepted Islam willingly today, as doing so would elevate their status and bring them closer to Allah's mercy. Genuine faith embraced in this life would lead to true honor and success.

The Futility of Belief at the Time of Death

The verse also indicates that accepting Islam at the time of death, when one sees the angels of punishment, would be of no benefit. At that point, the acceptance of faith would be considered forced and insincere, and thus would not save them from the consequences of their past actions. The time for genuine repentance and faith would have passed.

Ala-Maududi

(102:3) Nay, you will soon come to know;[3]

3. That is, you are under the delusion that the abundance of the worldly goods and surpassing others in it is real progress and success, whereas the opposite is the case. Soon you will know its evil end and you will realize that it was a stupendous error in which you remained involved throughout your life. Soon may mean the Hereafter. That is, for the Being Whose sight comprehends all ages, from eternity to eternity, a few thousand years or a few hundred thousand years can only be a short span of the eternal time. Soon it can also mean death, for death is not very far away from any man, and soon after death man will come to know whether the occupations which engaged him throughout life were a means of good fortune and success for him, or of misfortune and failure.

(3) No! You are going to know.
