Tafseer (Commentary) of the Verse

"And He found you needy, so He enriched you"

The Prophet’s ﷺ Initial State of Poverty

  • Allah Almighty did not create the Prophet ﷺ in an aristocratic or wealthy family but rather in a state of poverty.
  • This ensured that no one could claim the advent of Islam was due to wealth or governmental support.

How Allah Enriched the Prophet ﷺ

  1. Through the Wealth of Blessed Companions and Family:

    • Allah enriched the Prophet ﷺ through the wealth of:

      • Bibi Khadijah (May Allah be pleased with her): His honorable wife, whose wealth supported the Prophet’s mission.
      • Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (May Allah be pleased with him): The first Caliph and devoted companion.
      • Hazrat Uthman Ghani (May Allah be pleased with him): Known for his immense generosity.
    • Their wealth was blessed and became a means of service to the Holy Prophet ﷺ.

    • These companions are considered fortunate because Allah made them wealthy for the sake of His Beloved Prophet ﷺ.

  2. Ownership of Heavenly and Earthly Treasures:

    • Allah granted the Prophet ﷺ the keys to the treasures of the earth and mastery over the heavens and the earth.
    • Allah says:
      • "O Beloved! Undoubtedly, We have bestowed upon you an abundance of good" (Surah Al-Kawthar: Verse 1).
      • "Allah and His Messenger has enriched them out of His Grace" (Surah At-Tawbah: Verse 74).
  3. Wealth Beyond Imagination:

    • The Prophet ﷺ stated:
      • "I have been given the keys of the treasures of the earth."
      • "If I so desire, mountains of gold will walk with me."
    • No wealthy person like the Holy Prophet ﷺ has ever been or will ever be born.
  4. Richness of the Heart:

    • Allah enriched the Prophet ﷺ with a richness of the heart, making gold and worldly wealth appear as insignificant as a potsherd.

The Prophet ﷺ as the Provider for Creation

  • The entire creation is referred to as the Prophet’s Ayaal (family).
  • Allah provides for creation through the court of the Holy Prophet ﷺ.
  • It is mentioned in Ahadith that whoever the Prophet ﷺ gazes upon is blessed with wealth.

The Prophet ﷺ as a Reflection of All Prophets

  • Among the Prophets, four were notably wealthy:
    • Hazrat Ibrahim, Hazrat Sulaiman, Hazrat Dawood, and Hazrat Yusuf (Peace Be Upon Them).
  • The Holy Prophet ﷺ, as the possessor of all Prophetic qualities, was both poor and wealthy.

The Prophet’s Empathy for Orphans

  • Being an orphan himself, the Prophet ﷺ deeply understood the struggles of orphans.
  • Allah reminds the Prophet ﷺ of His care:
    • "O My Beloved, since you yourself had been an orphan, you are fully aware of the pain and dejection suffered by the orphans."

Prohibition of Oppression Against Orphans

  1. Unlawful Actions Against Orphans:

    • In Arabia, infidels would seize the wealth of orphans unlawfully.
    • Such acts included:
      • Devouring their wealth.
      • Depriving orphans of their inheritance.
      • Scolding or beating orphans cruelly.
  2. Islamic Jurisprudence on Orphans’ Wealth:

    • It is forbidden to misuse the wealth of minor orphans for:
      • Charitable acts like Khatam or Fateha.
      • Expenses for burial shrouds or charity on behalf of the deceased if orphans have rights in the inheritance.

Ala-Maududi

(93:8) And did He not find you in want, and then enriched you?[8]

8. The Prophet’s (peace be upon him) father had left only ashe-camel and a slave-girl in heritage for him; so he startedhis life in a state of poverty. Then a time came when thewealthiest lady among the Quraish, Khadijah, first madehim her partner in trade, then married him, and he tookcharge of all her trade and business. Thus, he not onlybecame wealthy but his riches in no way were dependent onthe resources of his wife; his own hard work and abilityhad gone a long way towards promoting her trade andcommerce.

(8) And He found you poor and made [you] self-sufficient.
