3. The Significance of "Father" and "Child"

  • Symbolism of Father and Child
The word "father" symbolizes Hazrat Adam عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ and the word "child" represents his progeny. Alternatively, "father" may signify Hazrat Ebrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ, while "child" denotes the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ or his followers. This profound analogy reveals several insights:

Key Insights

  1. Human Nobility in Creation
Allah Almighty emphasizes the noble status of humanity by taking an oath on Hazrat Adam عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ and his descendants.

  2. Superiority of the Father
The father’s rank is elevated above the mother because Allah swore by the father and not the mother. This shows the father’s pivotal role as the origin and protector of his progeny.

  3. Exalted Status of the Prophets

    • Hazrat Ebrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ, the Friend of Allah (Khaleelullah), and the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ, the Beloved of Allah (Habeebullah), are highlighted as the most superior among the Prophets.
    • The Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ stands as the ultimate spiritual guide and cherisher of his Ummah, akin to a father for his children.
  4. Uniqueness of the Prophetic Relationship

    • Just as a child can never equal their father, no follower can ever claim equality with a Prophet.
    • The Prophets maintain their fatherly role over their followers even after death, reinforcing their eternal bond of guidance.

Lessons for the Believers

  1. Role of Prophets as Spiritual Fathers

    • Prophets are spiritual fathers to their followers, not brothers. Thus, their wives are regarded as the Mothers of the Believers, making marriage to them impermissible.
  2. Humility Towards the Prophets

    • Claiming equality with the Prophets is an act of disbelief (Kufr). Believers must maintain reverence and total submission to them.
  3. Universal Brotherhood

    • Just as a father fosters unity among his children irrespective of race or status, the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ established a universal brotherhood, uniting all believers under the banner of faith.
  4. Respect for the Prophet’s Kin and Companions

    • The Prophet’s family, companions, saints, and scholars are sources of honor and pride for the Ummah, just as a father’s kin are revered by his children.

Ala-Maududi

(90:3) and I swear by the parent and his offspring:[4]

4. As the words “father and children he begot” have been used indefinitely, and this is followed by the mention of man, father could only imply Adam (peace be upon him) and children the human beings who existed in the world, exist today and will exist in the future.

(3) And [by] the father[1924] and that which was born [of him],

[1924]- Said to be Adam (upon him be peace) .
