13. To free a slave

This verse speaks about an act of great virtue and mercy: freeing slaves or alleviating the suffering of others. The command to free a slave goes beyond its literal meaning, encompassing various forms of liberation and assistance, both physical and spiritual.

Key Points:

  1. Literal Meaning:

    • Freeing one’s slave: Encourages the act of setting one’s own slaves free as an expression of mercy and piety.
    • Freeing others’ slaves: Assisting in the emancipation of slaves owned by others, financially or otherwise.
    • Relieving the debtor: Helping someone burdened with debt by paying it off on their behalf.
    • Releasing the oppressed prisoner: Advocating for and facilitating the release of individuals unjustly imprisoned or held captive.
    • Easing hardships: Providing relief to those in difficult circumstances, whether through financial aid, moral support, or physical assistance.
  2. Spiritual Interpretation:

    • Freeing the heart from the baser self: According to the Sufi sages, it also means freeing one’s heart from the captivity of selfish desires and worldly distractions, enabling spiritual growth.
    • Liberation from Hellfire: Performing good deeds and acts of piety to secure freedom from punishment in the Hereafter.
    • Fulfilling the obligations of the deceased: Paying compensation (fidya) for the missed prayers, fasts, or other unfulfilled obligations of a deceased believer to free them from accountability in the Hereafter.
  3. Broader Implications:

    • This verse emphasizes the value of compassion, justice, and responsibility toward others.
    • It highlights the interconnectedness of social and spiritual liberation, showing that acts of mercy benefit both the oppressed and the one performing them.
