The Generosity of the Holy Prophet ﷺ in Disclosing the Unseen

"And he (Muhammad ﷺ) is not a miser as to the disclosing of the unseen." (Surah At-Takweer: 24)

1. The Knowledge of the Unseen Given to the Holy Prophet ﷺ

20. This verse establishes two key points:

  • The Holy Prophet ﷺ has been granted knowledge of the unseen.
  • He has shared much of it with his followers.

Generosity is only attributed to someone who possesses something valuable and distributes it. Since the Holy Prophet ﷺ is described as not being a miser in sharing the unseen, it confirms that he was given divine knowledge and revealed it as per Allah’s command.

2. The Meaning of the Unseen (Ghayb)

The unseen in this context refers to:

  1. Matters of Shariah (Islamic Laws): The divine rulings revealed by Allah Almighty.
  2. Events of the Past and Future: The knowledge of past nations and future occurrences.
  3. The Unseen Realms: The realities of the unseen world, including angels, Jannah, Jahannam, and the Day of Judgment.

3. The Obligation of Revealing Religious Knowledge

  • A Religious Scholar Must Not Conceal Knowledge: Scholars should not withhold religious guidance from people.
  • The Holy Prophet ﷺ Fully Delivered His Message: He did not hide any aspect of the religion.

Some objectors cite the Hadith of Qirtas to claim that the Holy Prophet ﷺ did not complete his mission. However, this belief contradicts:

  • The Quranic Command: "O Messenger! Communicate that which has been sent down to you from your Lord." (Surah Al-Ma’idah: 67)
  • The Completion of Religion: "Today I have completed for you your religion." (Surah Al-Ma’idah: 3)

4. The Prophet’s ﷺ Disclosure of the Unseen to His Companions

  • Allah Bestowed Knowledge of the Unseen Upon Him: The Holy Prophet ﷺ was granted divine knowledge.
  • He Informed His Companions About the Unseen: He shared these insights with the noble Companions as per Allah’s will.

Ala-Maududi

(81:24) nor does he grudge (conveying this knowledge about) the Unseen;[20]

20. That is, the Messenger (peace be upon him) of Allah does not conceal anything from you. Whatever of the unseen realities are made known to him by Allah, whether they relate to the essence and attributes of Allah, the angels, life-after death and Resurrection, or to the Hereafter, Heaven and Hell, he conveys everything to you without change.

(24) And he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] is not a withholder of [knowledge of] the unseen.[1873]

[1873]- Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ) did not withhold that knowledge of the unseen which Allāh had revealed to him in the Qur’ān.
