Transliteration:( Al jawaaril kunnas )
"That move straight and then disappears." (Surah Al-Takweer: 16)
12. Hazrat Ali Murtaza (May Allah be Pleased with him) explained that this refers to the five stars known as "The Amazing Five" — Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, and Mercury. These stars appear to move in different ways due to their spherical movements: sometimes moving forward at high speed, sometimes appearing stationary, and at other times appearing to move backward, as observed by astrologers. This verse highlights the extraordinary speeds and movements of these celestial bodies.
From the perspective of modern science, this description aligns well with our understanding of planetary movement:
Forward movement: Planets like Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, and Mercury all move in regular orbits around the Sun, which corresponds to their "straight" forward motion, consistent with what we understand in planetary motion.
Stationary appearance: Sometimes, due to the relative positions of Earth and the other planets in their orbits, a planet can appear to be stationary in the sky. This is often observed when the planet is at the peak of its motion relative to Earth.
Retrograde motion: Retrograde motion is the apparent backward motion of a planet as observed from Earth. This occurs when Earth, moving faster in its orbit, overtakes another planet, making it appear to move backward in the sky. This phenomenon is commonly observed with planets like Mars, Venus, and Mercury.
This description of the planets' movements aligns with modern scientific knowledge of planetary motion, reinforcing the Quranic insight into the celestial dynamics.
