12.It is Allah who created seven heavens, and the same number of earths like (49) them. They continue to get the command (50), that you may know that Allah has power (51) over all the things, and that Allah encircles (52) all the things in His knowledge.

Surah At-Talaq Ayat 12 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi

49. This tells us that there are seven regions of earth; or seven foreign lands known as seven climes, or seven regions. But, because all these courts are made of sand and are joined with one another, the Holy Qur'aan refers to the earth in the singular The heavens are of different things and since they are far from one another they are referred to in the plural.

50. This means the commands of Allah. Almighty are prevalent in the heavens and the earth. There is no single place where His law is not in force.

51. This means that the Lord Who is today issuing His laws in the heavens and on earth. will tomorrow be taking accountability on the Day of Judgement and giving reward and punishment.

52. Thus, resurrecting the dead. taking account of the entire creation is not difficult at all In addition, this accountability is not for His knowledge, but to silence the creation.

Ibn-Kathir

12. It is Allah Who has created seven heavens and of the earth the like thereof. His command descends between them, that you may know that Allah has power over all things, and that Allah surrounds all things with (His) knowledge.

Allah’s Perfect Power

Allah the Exalted asserts His perfect power and infinite greatness, so that the great religion that He has legislated is honored and implemented,

(It is Allah Who has created seven heavens) Allah said in similar Ayat, like what Prophet Nuh said to his people,

(See you not how Allah has created the seven heavens one above another) (71:15), and,

(The seven heavens and the earth and all that is therein, glorify him.) (17:44) Allah’s statement,

(and of the earth the like thereof.) means, He created seven earths. In the Two Sahihs, there is a Hadith that states,

«مَنْ ظَلَمَ قِيدَ شِبْرٍ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ طُوِّقَهُ مِنْ سَبْعِ أَرَضِين»

(Whoever usurps the land of somebody unjustly, even if it was a mere hand span, then his neck will be encircled with it down to the seven earths.) And in Sahih Al-Bukhari the wording is:

«خُسِفَ بِهِ إِلَى سَبْعِ أَرَضِين»

(…he will sink down to the seven earths.) In the beginning of my book, Al-Bidayah wan-Nihayah, I mentioned the various narrations for this Hadith when I narrated the story of the creation of the earth. All the thanks and praise is due to Allah. Those who explained this Hadith to mean the seven continents have brought an implausible explanation that contradicts the letter of the Qur’an and the Hadith without having proof. This is the end of the Tafsir of Surat At-Talaq, all the thanks and praise is due to Allah.

(66:12) Allah has also set forth the parable of Mary, the daughter of Imran,[26] who guarded her chastity,[27] and into whom We breathed of Our Spirit,[28] and who testified to the words of her Lord and His Books. She was among the obedient.[29]

26. It may be that the name of Mary’s father was Imran, or she may have been called daughter of Imran because she belonged to the family of Imran.

27. This is a refutation of the accusation by the Jews that the birth of Jesus was, God forbid, the result of a sin of his mother. Their same accusation has been called a monstrous calumny in (Surah An-Nisa, Ayat 156). For explanation, see (Surah An-Nisa, ayat 156) note 190.

28. That is, without her having any connection with a man, Allah breathed into her womb a Spirit from Himself. For explanation, see (Surah An-Nisa, ayat ) note 212,213, and (Surah Al-Anbiya, ayat 91) note 89.

29. For the explanation of the object for which these three kinds of women have been cited as an example, see the Introduction to the
