Transliteration:( Kamasalil lazeena min qablihim qareeban zaaqoo wabaala amrihim wa lahum 'azaabun aleem )
“They are like those who were just before them. They tasted the evil result of their doings. And they shall have a painful [49] punishment.”
These were the wealthy and arrogant disbelievers who faced the poor Muslims at the Battle of Badr and were completely defeated.
This verse reminds us that worldly strength and riches do not save one from Allah’s punishment. If Allah wills, He can:
Destroy an army with small birds, like the Elephant Army of Abraha, or
Bring down mighty Goliath (Jalut) through the hands of the weak David (Dawud عليه السلام).
So too, the current enemies of Islam — like the hypocrites and People of the Book — will face similar humiliation and defeat, as did those before them.
The tafsir of Surah Hashr verse 15 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Hashr ayat 11 which provides the complete commentary from verse 11 through 17.
(59:15) They are like those who tasted the evil consequences of their deeds[26] a short while before. A grievous chastisement awaits them.
26. The allusion is to the disbelievers of the Quraish and the Jewish clan of the Bani Qrainuqa who had been defeated by a handful of ill-equipped Muslims in spite of their larger numbers and superior equipment, due mainly to these weaknesses.
