📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Ḥujurāt – Verse 16

"Please declare! 'Do you teach Allah what is your religion [49]?' And Allah knows whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. And Allah knows everything."

✅ [49] Claiming Faith vs. True Faith

This verse was revealed in response to the hypocrites who, after the previous verse, swore oaths claiming to be sincere believers. They were essentially trying to prove their sincerity to the Holy Prophet ﷺ. However, Allah rebukes this behavior by saying:
"Do you teach Allah about your religion?"
In other words, are you informing Allah of what lies in your hearts when He already knows everything in the heavens and the earth?

This establishes a key point: To express your sincerity to the Prophet ﷺ is, in reality, expressing it to Allah, because Allah is fully aware, and the Prophet ﷺ is His chosen representative.

If you wish to behold Allah, then look at the Holy Prophet ﷺ, for he is the reflection of Divine Light.
If you wish to speak to Allah, then speak to the Prophet ﷺ, for he conveys the Message from the Lord.
If you desire the company of Allah, then remain in the company of the Prophet ﷺ and those who carry his light.

As Maulana Rumi beautifully said:
"If you desire to seek the company of Allah, then learn to seek the company of the sages of Allah."

This verse also implies that claiming sincerity is not enough; true sincerity is known to Allah, and only He judges who is genuinely faithful.
