📖 Commentary of Verse 16 (Surah Al-Mujadila)

“They make their oaths to serve as a cover, so they turn [58] away from the path of Allah. Therefore, they shall have a humiliating punishment [59].”

✅ [58] False Oaths Used for Personal Protection

This tells us that the hypocrites were using false oaths as a shield to protect their lives and property.
By doing so, they appeared loyal outwardly while internally opposing the truth and deviating from the path of Allah.

✅ [59] Humiliation in the Hereafter

In the first verse, the punishment of the grave was implied.
Here, the verse refers to the punishment of the Hereafter,
which shows that there is no repetition—rather, a progression in the severity of their fate.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Mujadilah verse 16 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Mujadilah ayat 14 which provides the complete commentary from verse 14 through 19.

(58:16) They have taken their oaths as a shield by means of which they hinder people from the Way of Allah.[34] Theirs shall be a humiliating chastisement.

Ala-Maududi

(58:16) They have taken their oaths as a shield by means of which they hinder people from the Way of Allah.[34] Theirs shall be a humiliating chastisement.

34. That is, on the one hand, they swear oaths to their faith and fidelity to make the Muslims believe that they belong to them, and on the other, they sow doubts and suspicions against Islam and the followers of Islam and the Prophet (peace be upon him) of Islam in the hearts of the people, so that they should turn away from Islam in disgust taking their word to be a true inside picture of Islam, coming from the Muslims themselves.

(16) They took their [false] oaths as a cover, so they averted [people] from the way of Allāh, and for them is a humiliating punishment.
