📖 Commentary of Verse 36 (Surah Al-Mursalat)

"As a reward from your Lord, as a sufficient gift."

✅ Divine Reward and Bounty [20]

  • This verse highlights that the rewards of the Hereafter are granted as a special favor and complete gift from Allah Almighty, not merely as a compensation.

🌿 Key Insights from the Explanation:

  1. The world is not the place of true reward. Ultimate recompense, whether Paradise or Hell, will be in the Hereafter. Worldly blessings are temporary and incomplete.

  2. Salvation is guaranteed for the one who believes in Allah Almighty according to the correct belief (Aqeedah) as taught by the Holy Prophet ﷺ. This is a fundamental condition for entry into Paradise.

  3. The believers will receive both rewards and Divine bestowals, while the disbelievers will receive only what they deserve, i.e., punishment — hence only judged recompense, not generous gifts.

🎁 Types of Divine Bestowals

  • Rewards (جزا): These include physical bounties such as:

    • Heavenly spouses (hoories)

    • Palaces and gardens

    • Luxuries of Paradise

  • Bestowals (عطیہ / بخشش): These are beyond what is earned:

    • The Vision of Allah Almighty (Deedar)

    • Divine Forgiveness

    • Love of Allah and nearness to Him

  • Some rewards are exponentially multiplied, e.g., one good deed being rewarded a thousand times over, which reflects Divine generosity rather than strict justice.

Ala-Maududi

(78:36) a recompense from your Lord and an ample reward[22]

22. A reward and generous gift: that is, they will not only be given their due rewards which they will deserve for their good deeds, but over and above these they will be given additional and generous gifts and prizes as well. Contrary to this, in respect of the dwellers of Hell it has been said: They will be recompensed fully for their misdeeds. That is, they will neither be punished less than what they will deserve for their crimes nor more. This theme has been explained at length at many places in the Quran, for example, see (Surah Younus, Ayat 26-27); (Surah An-Naml, Ayat 89-90); (Surah Al-Qasas, Ayat 84); (Surah Saba, Ayat 33-38); (Surah Al-Momin, Ayat 40).

(36) [As] reward from your Lord, [a generous] gift [made due by] account,[1828]

[1828]- i.e., as a result of both their own righteous deeds and the limitless generosity of Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) . Another meaning is "a gift calculated [to be adequate]."
