Quran-57:14 Surah Al-hadeed English Translation,Transliteration and Tafsir(Tafseer).

يُنَادُونَهُمۡ أَلَمۡ نَكُن مَّعَكُمۡۖ قَالُواْ بَلَىٰ وَلَٰكِنَّكُمۡ فَتَنتُمۡ أَنفُسَكُمۡ وَتَرَبَّصۡتُمۡ وَٱرۡتَبۡتُمۡ وَغَرَّتۡكُمُ ٱلۡأَمَانِيُّ حَتَّىٰ جَآءَ أَمۡرُ ٱللَّهِ وَغَرَّكُم بِٱللَّهِ ٱلۡغَرُورُ

Transliteration:( Yunaadoonahum alam nakum ma'akum qaaloo balaa wa laakinnakum fatantum anfusakum wa tarabbastum wartabtum wa gharratkumul amaaniyyu hatta jaaa'a amrul laahi wa gharrakum billaahil gharoor )

14. They (hypocrites) will call them (the believers): "Were we not with [44] you?" They will say: "Yes, but you caused yourselves in temptation [45] and waited and doubted [46] for evils (for the believers). And your vain desires deceived [47] you till Allah's Command came [48] and the great deceiver (Shaitaan) deceived you regarding Allah." (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(14) They [i.e., the hypocrites] will call to them [i.e., the believers], "Were we not with you?" They will say, "Yes, but you afflicted yourselves[1631] and awaited [misfortune for us] and doubted, and wishful thinking deluded you until there came the command of Allāh. And the Deceiver [i.e., Satan] deceived you concerning Allāh. (Saheen International Translation)

📖 Verse 14 (Surah Al-Hadid – The Iron)

"They (the hypocrites) will call them (the believers): 'Were we not with you?' [44] They will say: 'Yes, but you caused yourselves into temptation [45], and you waited and doubted [46], and your vain desires deceived you [47] till Allah's command came [48], and the great deceiver (Shaitaan) deceived you regarding Allah.'"

[44] A Cry of Desperation – “Were We Not with You?”
From behind the dividing wall, the hypocrites will plead with the believers: “Were we not with you?” They attempt to justify themselves by recalling their physical presence among the Muslim community. They attended gatherings, prayers, and participated outwardly in Muslim life. But presence without true belief holds no value on the Day of Judgment.

[45] You Put Yourselves in Temptation (Fitnah)
The believers respond: “Yes, you were among us—but you plunged yourselves into fitnah.” Outwardly, the hypocrites stood with the Muslims, but inwardly they were aligned with the disbelievers. Their duplicity, insincerity, and internal alliance with the enemies of Islam proved their hearts were not with the truth. This “temptation” includes:

  • Love for wealth and status,

  • Fear of losing power,

  • Hesitation to sacrifice for faith.

[46] Doubt and Delay
The hypocrites constantly hesitated. They were plagued by doubt in:

  • The Prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ,

  • The truth of Islam,

  • The reality of the Day of Judgment.
    They waited, hoping for a worldly advantage—always leaning toward whoever held power. They were never firmly rooted in conviction, swaying like reeds in the wind.

[47] Deceived by False Hopes and Political Calculations
Their vain desires—such as trying to please both Muslims and disbelievers—ultimately deceived them. They thought Islam was temporary, or that being with Muslims was politically safe, while their hearts remained attached to worldly benefits. This false hope blinded them from the truth. As Allah says in Surah Al-A’raf (7:46): “They have not yet entered Paradise, but they hope for it.” Hope without action and sincerity is just self-deception.

[48] Until Allah’s Command Came – Too Late
They persisted in hypocrisy until death arrived—Allah’s final command. This verse affirms that repentance is accepted until the soul reaches the throat, but once the signs of death appear and the unseen becomes visible, faith and regret hold no weight. The hypocrites delayed their sincerity too long, and now they are lost.

Final Blow – Shaytaan’s Deception Regarding Allah
The verse ends with a reminder that Shaytaan deceived them regarding Allah. He whispered that Allah is All-Forgiving while they continued in sin, delaying repentance. They misused Allah’s mercy as an excuse for inaction and disbelief. In truth, Allah’s mercy is for the sincere, not for those who use it as a shield for hypocrisy.

(57:14) The hypocrites will call out to the believers: “Were we not with you?”[20] The believers will reply: “Yes; but you allowed yourselves to succumb to temptations,[21] and you wavered[22] and you remained in doubt[23] and false expectations deluded you until Allah’s command came to pass,[24] and the Deluder[25] deluded you concerning Allah.

(57:14) The hypocrites will call out to the believers: “Were we not with you?”[20] The believers will reply: “Yes; but you allowed yourselves to succumb to temptations,[21] and you wavered[22] and you remained in doubt[23] and false expectations deluded you until Allah’s command came to pass,[24] and the Deluder[25] deluded you concerning Allah.


20. That is, did we not live with you together in the same Muslim society? Did we not affirm the faith? Did we not offer the Prayers along with you and observe the Fast and perform the Hajj and pay the Zakat? Did we not sit with you in your assemblies and were we not bound in marriage ties and kinship with you? Then, how is it that we have been separated from you today?

21. That is, in spite of your claim to be Muslims, you never believed like true and sincere Muslims and remained suspended between belief and unbelief. You still had your interests attached to disbelief and the disbelievers and you never gave yourselves up wholly to Islam.

22. Tarabbus (from which tarabbastum of the text is derived) means to wait and tarry for an opportunity. When a person is unable to decide which of the two alternative ways he should choose but stands and waits to consider which way should be more favorable for him to follow, he is involved in tarabbus. The hypocrites had adopted the same attitude during the critical time of the conflict between Islam and un-Islam. Neither were they siding with disbelief openly nor were spending their energy to support and help Islam with full conviction. They were sitting on the fence, waiting to see which party in the conflict became dominant, so that if it was Islam they may join it on the basis of their affirmation of the faith, and if it was unbelief they may side with its supporters taking advantage of their neutral position in the conflict.

23. This implies different kinds of doubts that a hypocrite suffers from, and the same also are the actual causes of his hypocrisy. He doubts the existence of God, the Prophethood of the Prophet, the Quran’s being Allah’s book, the Hereafter, its accountability, and its rewards and punishments, and he doubts whether the conflict between the truth and falsehood is real, or a mere delusion; as for himself he considers the only truth to be that one should enjoy life and its pleasures to the full. For unless a person is involved in such doubts he can never be a hypocrite.

24. This can have two meanings:

(1) Until death came to him, you could not shed this delusion till the last moment.

(2) That Islam became dominant, while you looked on unconcerned.

25. That is, Satan.

(14) They [i.e., the hypocrites] will call to them [i.e., the believers], "Were we not with you?" They will say, "Yes, but you afflicted yourselves[1631] and awaited [misfortune for us] and doubted, and wishful thinking deluded you until there came the command of Allāh. And the Deceiver [i.e., Satan] deceived you concerning Allāh.
