📖 Commentary of Verse 16 (Surah Al-Jinn)

And if they had remained steadfast on the Right Way, We would certainly have given them to drink abundant water.

✅ Blessings for Remaining Steadfast

  1. Allah (اللَّهُ ) is saying: If the people had stayed firm on the Straight Path—meaning they believed and lived with righteousness—He would have blessed them with plenty of water, i.e., abundant rain and provision.

In the desert environment of Arabia, water represents sustenance, prosperity, and life. That's why water is mentioned here—it symbolizes worldly blessings that follow when people live by the Right Way.

So, this verse tells us:
➡️ Righteousness brings worldly ease.
➡️ Steadfastness in faith leads to barakah (blessings) in both spiritual and material life.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Jinn verse 16 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Jinn ayat 11 which provides the complete commentary from verse 11 through 17.

(72:16) If[15] people were to keep firmly to the Right Way, We would have vouchsafed them abundant rain[16]

Ala-Maududi

(72:16) If[15] people were to keep firmly to the Right Way, We would have vouchsafed them abundant rain[16]

15. The conversation of the jinn having come to an end, with this begins the speech of Allah.

16. This is the same thing as has been said in (Surah Nooh, Ayat 10-11). Seek forgiveness of Allah. He will send abundant rains for you from heaven. For explanation, see (Surah Nooh, ayat 12) note 12. Abundance of water has been used for abundance of blessings metaphorically for human life, and habitations also depend on water. Without water there can be no human settlement, nor can man’s basic needs be fulfilled, nor his industries work and prosper.

(16) And [Allāh revealed] that if they had remained straight on the way, We would have given them abundant rain [i.e., provision]
