📖 Commentary of Verse 6 (Surah Jinn 72:6)

“And some men from among the humans [11] used to seek refuge [12] with some men from among the jinn, so they increased them in arrogance [13].”

✅ Meaning of "Men" in Context [11]

When the word 'Rijaal' (men) is used without any restriction, it refers specifically to male human beings. Male jinns are not called 'Rijaal' unless explicitly mentioned. In this verse, the phrase "from the jinn" restricts its meaning, making it clear. For example, in the verse: “And We sent not before you any but men and not jinn,” the use of Rijaal without restriction confirms that Prophethood is exclusive to humans.

✅ Seeking Refuge in Jinn is Unlawful [12]

People in the pre-Islamic era, while traveling, would often seek protection at dangerous places by saying: “We take refuge in the chief of this valley”. They also offered niyaz (offerings) to jinns to ward off evil or illnesses. This practice is condemned, as it leads to the jinns’ rebellion and arrogance. However, seeking help from Prophets or saints is permissible, since it does not lead to pride or arrogance in those pious personalities.

✅ Cause of Jinns' Arrogance [13]

This verse reveals that the arrogance of jinns increased because humans began relying on them. When humans sought help from jinns in both travel and daily life, the jinns began to think they truly possessed power. Since mankind—the superior creation—was depending on them, their sense of pride and transgression grew.

Ala-Maududi

(72:6) and that “some from among the humans used to seek protection of some among the jinn, and thus they increased the arrogance[7] of the jinn”;

7. Ibn Abbas says that in the pre-Islamic days of ignorance when the Arabs had to spend a night in some uninhabited, desolate valley, they would shout out: We seek refuge of the jinn, who is owner of this valley. In other traditions of the pre-Islamic ignorance also the same thing has been reported frequently. For example, if in a place they ran short of water and fodder, the wandering Bedouins would send one of their men to some other place to see if water and fodder were available; and when they reached the new site under his direction, they would shout out before they halted to pitch the camp: We seek refuge of the sustainer of this valley so that we may live here in peace from every calamity. They believed that every un-inhabited place was under the control of one or another jinn and if someone stayed there without seeking his refuge, the jinn would either himself trouble the settlers, or would let others trouble them. These believing jinn are referring to this very thing. They meant that when man, the vicegerent of the earth, started fearing them without any reason, and started seeking their refuge instead of God’s, it caused their people to become even more arrogant, haughty and wicked, and they became even more fearless and bold in adopting error and disbelief.

(6) And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only] increased them in burden [i.e., sin].
