📖 Commentary of Verse 9 (Surah Jinn 72:9)

“And that we used to sit in positions to listen, but whoever tries to listen now will find a blazing flame [17] waiting for him.” (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

✅ Stoppage of Eavesdropping after the Prophet’s Arrival [16]

Before the arrival of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, the jinns used to sit in hidden positions in the skies to secretly listen to the conversations of angels. They would pass this information to astrologers and soothsayers, who would then use it to make predictions on Earth.

✅ End of Celestial Access After Revelation Began [17]

After the advent of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, a divine command barred the jinns from accessing the skies. Any attempt to listen would now result in being struck by a blazing flame.

This had direct consequences:

  • 🔸 The predictions of astrologers and pundits became completely unreliable and inaccurate.

  • 🔸 Earlier, their partial accuracy was due to the jinns feeding them stolen heavenly news.

  • 🔸 With this system shut down, only revelation through Prophets became the reliable source of divine knowledge.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Jinn verse 9 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Jinn ayat 8 which provides the complete commentary from verse 8 through 10.

(72:9) and that “we would take up stations in the heaven to try to hear but anyone who now attempts to listen finds a shooting meteor in wait for him”;[9]

Ala-Maududi

(72:9) and that “we would take up stations in the heaven to try to hear but anyone who now attempts to listen finds a shooting meteor in wait for him”;[9]

9. This is the reason why these jinn were now out searching as to what particularly had happened or was going to happen on the earth, which had necessitated strict security measures against eavesdropping so that they were driven away from wherever they tried to eavesdrop in any way.

(9) And we used to sit therein in positions for hearing,[1767] but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him.

[1767]- Before the prophethood of Muḥammad (ﷺ) the jinn used to collect information by eavesdropping on the angels and then pass it on to fortunetellers and soothsayers.
