"He (Musa) showed him a great sign."
The Miraculous Staff of Hazrat Musa (On whom be peace):
Hazrat Musa's (On whom be peace) staff was a remarkable instrument through which many miracles were performed, demonstrating his Divine mission. Among the miracles shown were:
Turning into a snake: This miracle astonished the Pharaoh and his court.
Used as a bucket and rope: It would serve to draw water from wells, showing its utility.
Elongating to reach deep places: The staff had the ability to stretch according to the depth required.
Guarding Hazrat Musa (On whom be peace): The staff would act as a protector during Hazrat Musa's sleep.
Glowing like a torch: At night, it would shine brightly, guiding him.
Assisting with the goats: The staff helped care for animals.
Gushing water from stones: When struck on stones, it would make water flow like a fountain.
Parting the sea: Most famously, when Hazrat Musa (On whom be peace) struck the sea with it, the waters parted, creating a dry path for the Israelites to cross.
The tafsir of Surah An-Naziat verse 20 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Naziat ayat 15 which provides the complete commentary from verse 15 through 26.
(79:20) Then Moses (went to Pharaoh and) showed him the Great Sign;[9]
9. The great sign: The turning of the staff into a serpent, as has been mentioned at several places in the Quran. Obviously there could be no greater sign than that a lifeless staff should turn into a living serpent right in front of the eyes of the people, that it should devour the artificial serpents produced by the magicians out of their staffs and cords, and when the Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) should pick it up, it should become a walking stick again. This was proof that it was Allah, Lord of the worlds, Who had sent Moses (peace be upon him) as a Prophet.
[1842]- i.e., the miracle of his staff becoming a great snake.
