📖 Commentary of Verse 42 (Surah An-Nazi’at)

"They ask you about the Hour, when it is to come." [19]

✅ Disbelievers’ Mocking Inquiry About the Hour [19]

  • The disbelievers of Makkah mockingly ask about the Day of Judgment, seeking its exact time as a form of jest.

  • The revelation came in response, stopping the Prophet ﷺ from revealing such details.

  • While the Prophet ﷺ knew the timing of the Hour—Friday, 10th of Muharram—this knowledge was not disclosed to the disbelievers, as their questions were not sincere.

Ibn-Kathir

Ala-Maududi

(79:42) They ask you about the Hour: “When will it be?”[22]

22. The disbelievers of Makkah asked this question of the Prophet (peace be upon him) over and over again. By this they did not mean to know the time and date of the coming of Resurrection but to mock it. For further explanation, see (Surah Al-Mulk, ayat 25).

(42) They ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival?[1848]

[1848]- Literally, "resting" or "establishment."
