🏆 The Neglect of Orphans

📖 Tafseer (Commentary) of Ayah 89:17

🔹 Reason for Revelation

📖 The Story of Qadama bin Mazoon

  • Qadama bin Mazoon was an orphan under the care of Umayyah bin Khalaf, a wealthy leader of the Quraysh.
  • Umayyah failed to fulfill his responsibilities towards the orphan, neither supporting him nor treating him with kindness.
  • These verses were revealed to condemn such behavior (Roohul Ma’ani & Khazainul Irfaan).

🔹 Key Lessons from This Verse

The Highest Form of Worship

  • Caring for orphans, providing them education, proper upbringing, and love is one of the greatest acts of worship in Islam.
  • It is a religious and social obligation that carries immense reward.

⚠️ Responsibility Even for Non-Believers

  • Even disbelievers are accountable for mistreating orphans.
  • Umayyah bin Khalaf, despite his disbelief, was criticized for his negligence.
  • This shows that orphan care is a universal moral duty, not just for believers but for all of humanity.

🌟 A True Test of Compassion – The way a society treats its orphans reflects its true values. Honoring and supporting them is a sign of righteousness, while neglecting them is a cause for divine condemnation.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Fajr verse 17 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Fajr ayat 15 which provides the complete commentary from verse 15 through 21.

Ala-Maududi

(89:17) But no;[10] you do not treat the orphan honourably,[11]

10. That is, this is not all the criterion of honor and disgrace, for the real criterion is the moral good and evil.

11. That is, as long as his father is alive, your treatment of him is attentive and when his rather dies, even the paternal and maternal uncles and the elder brothers, to say nothing of the neighbors and distant relatives, neglect him.

(17) No![1919] But you do not honor the orphan

[1919]- It is not like you imagine. Rather, Allāh tries people through prosperity and hardship and rewards both gratitude and patience with honor in the Hereafter.
