📖 Commentary of Verse 17 (Surah Al-Mulk)

"Or, do you feel secure [35] from Him Who is in the heaven, that He will not send upon you a storm of stones? Then you will know how My warning [36] was."

[35] The Security of the Disbelievers

This verse addresses the false sense of security that the disbelievers feel. The disbelievers live without fear of Allah, thinking they are safe from His punishment. In contrast, a true believer places their hope in Allah, understanding that both fear and hope go hand in hand in their relationship with Allah. The verse serves as a warning: don't feel too secure, as punishment could come unexpectedly, as it did to the people of Lut (AS), who were punished with a storm of stones for their sins. We should be cautious not to let our sins lead us to such a fate.

[36] Faith After Seeing Punishment

The verse also mentions that the declaration of faith after seeing the punishment has no merit. True faith is belief in the unseen, in things not yet visible or tangible. Once the punishment is revealed, it is too late for sincere repentance, as faith at that point is driven by fear, not genuine belief.

Additionally, the verse emphasizes that idols or anything other than Allah should not be feared, as Allah's dominion extends over the heavens and everything in it. However, the verse clarifies that Allah does not reside in the heavens as a physical entity, since He is free from the limitations of space.

(67:17) Do you feel secure that He Who is in the heaven will not let loose upon you a storm of stones?[26] Then shall you know what My warning is like![27]

Ala-Maududi

(67:17) Do you feel secure that He Who is in the heaven will not let loose upon you a storm of stones?[26] Then shall you know what My warning is like![27]

26. The object is to impress this: Your very survival and well-being on the earth are at all times dependent upon Allah Almighty’s grace and bounty: you are not strutting about on this earth at will by your own power: you are under obligation only to Allah’s protection for each moment of your life that you are passing here, otherwise Allah at any moment may cause such an earthquake to occur as may make this very earth to become your grave instead of the cradle that it is, or may cause a windstorm to blow razing all your towns and settlements to the ground.

27. My warning: the warning that was being given through the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Quran to the disbelievers of Makkah to the effect: If you do not refrain from your disbelief and polytheism and do not accept the message of Tauhid being given to you, you will be overtaken by the scourge of God.

(17) Or do you feel secure that He who is above would not send against you a storm of stones? Then you would know how [severe] was My warning.
