Transliteration:( Wa laqad zaiyannas samaaa'ad dunyaa bimasaa beeha wa ja'alnaahaa rujoomal lish shayaateeni wa a'tadnaa lahum 'azaabas sa'eer )
"And certainly, We have adorned the nearest [12] heaven with lamps [13] and made them missiles for the devils [14], and We have prepared for them the punishment of the blazing fire [15]."
This verse refers to the first heaven, which is closest to the earth. The word “dunoon” in Arabic, meaning “near,” emphasizes this proximity. Allah has adorned this first heaven, making it a beautiful and significant part of His creation.
The “nearness” here is not just physical but also signifies its importance in the cosmic structure. It serves as the backdrop for the visible celestial bodies, especially the stars and the moon.
It’s important to note that the stars are not in the first heaven itself, but the moon resides in it. The verse highlights that the heavens are transparent, like glass, which is why the stars appear to be in the first heaven from our perspective on earth. This transparency allows the light of the stars to shine through, creating a beautiful spectacle in the night sky.
The stars in the sky also serve another purpose—they act as missiles for the devils. When infidel jinns attempt to eavesdrop on the angels’ conversations in the heavens, they are struck by a fire from these stars, either injuring or destroying them. This fire acts like a weapon, preventing the devils from gaining any forbidden knowledge from the heavenly realm.
The stars are not only objects of beauty but serve as a means of protection for the sacredness of the heavens, ensuring that nothing corrupts the divine knowledge.
The verse concludes by mentioning that the infidel jinns will face a severe punishment in the blazing fire of Hell. Even though they are created from fire, they will still suffer in the fire of Hell, much like humans feel pain when injured by something as insignificant as a lump of sand.
This illustrates the severity of the punishment for those who defy Allah’s commands, even when their creation might suggest they are immune to fire. The concept reinforces that no one is beyond the reach of divine justice.

(67:5) We have adorned the lower heaven[9] with lamps,[10] and have made them a means to drive away the satans.[11] We have prepared for them the chastisement of the Blazing Fire.
9. The world’s heaven: the heaven the stars and planets of which can be seen with the naked eye; the objects beyond that which can be seen only through telescopes are the distant heaven; and the heavens still farther away are those which have not yet been seen even with telescopes.
10. The word masabih in the original has been used as a common noun, and therefore, automatically gives the meaning of the lamp’s being splendid and glorious. It means: We have not created this universe dark, dismal and desolate, but have beautified and decorated it with stars, the glory and grandeur of which at night strike man with amazement.
11. This does not mean that the stars themselves are pelted at the Satans, nor that the meteorites shoot out only to drive away the Satans, but it means that the countless meteorites which originate from the stars and wander in space at tremendous speeds and which also fall to the earth in a continuous shower prevent the Satans of the earth from ascending to the heavens. Even if they try to ascend heavenward these meteorites drive them away. This thing has been mentioned here because the Arabs believed about the soothsayers, and this also was the claim made by the soothsayers themselves, that the Satans were under their control, or that they had a close contact with them, and through them they received news of the unseen, and thus, could foretell the destinies of the people. That is why at several places in the Quran, it has been stated that there is absolutely no possibility for the Satans ascending to the heavens and bringing news of the unseen. As for the truth about meteorites, man’s information in this regard is still without a scientific basis. However, the theory which seems best to account for all the facts known today and the information gathered from the examination of the meteorites fallen on the earth, is that meteorites originate from the disintegration of one or more planets and wander in space and sometimes fall to the earth under its gravitational pull.
