📖 Commentary of Verse 7 (Surah Al-Mulk)

"When they are thrown into it, they will hear its roaring [18] as it boils."

[18] The Roaring of Hell

This verse vividly describes the terrifying sound that the disbelievers will hear as they are thrown into Hell. The roaring of Hell is likened to the sound of boiling water or even the engine of a train, emphasizing its intensity and the horrific nature of the punishment.

The boiling sound is symbolic of the intense agony and the immense heat that awaits the disbelievers in Hell. It serves as a warning, reminding humanity of the consequences of disbelief and turning away from the truth. This roar is a sound that will be heard only by the inhabitants of Hell at the moment of their fall, highlighting their eternal suffering.

The Sound and Its Impact

This verse further emphasizes that the roaring sound of Hell will not just be a noise but will terrify those who hear it. The sound represents the ferocity and power of Hell, a place that is alive with destructive forces, boiling in fury as it welcomes its inmates.

Interestingly, the verse contrasts this with the inhabitants of Paradise, who, when crossing the Bridge, will not hear the terrifying sound of Hell. This difference highlights the stark contrast between the rewards of Paradise and the punishments of Hell. As mentioned in Surah Al-Anbiya (21:102), the righteous in Paradise will be shielded from such dreadful sounds, and their peace will remain uninterrupted by the horrors of Hell.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Al-Mulk verse 7 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Mulk ayat 6 which provides the complete commentary from verse 6 through 11.

(67:7) When they will be cast into it, they will hear it roar as it boils,[13]

Ala-Maududi

(67:7) When they will be cast into it, they will hear it roar as it boils,[13]

13. The word shahiq is used for producing a cry like the donkey’s braying. The sentence may also mean that it could be the sound of Hell itself, as well as that it would be the sound coming from Hell, where the people already flung into it would be screaming and crying. This second meaning is supported by (Surah Houd, Ayat 106), where it has been said: Therein they will pant and hiss (because of thirst), and the first meaning is confirmed by (Surah Al- Furqan, Ayat 12), which says: When the Hell will see them from afar, they will hear the sounds of its raging and roaring. On this basis, the correct meaning is that it would be the noise made both by Hell and by the dwellers of Hell.

(7) When they are thrown into it, they hear from it a [dreadful] inhaling while it boils up.
