📖 Commentary of Verse 5 (Surah Al-Qiyamah)

“But man desires to continue sinning ahead of him.”

Sinful Intent Behind Denial[5]
This verse clarifies that the disbelievers' objections to resurrection are not based on genuine confusion or intellectual doubt. Rather, they are rooted in wicked intentions and immoral desires. Their rejection is driven by the urge to continue sinning freely without accountability. They question the Hereafter only as a cover for their evil lifestyles.

Established Truths Ignored
There were already clear and solid proofs for the Prophethood of the Holy Prophet ﷺ and for the Day of Judgment. Despite this, these people willfully reject the truth. Their objections are not sincere but are instead excuses to justify their sinful actions.

Symbolism of ‘Ahead of Him’
The phrase “ahead of him” is understood by some scholars as a reference to the Day of Judgment, which lies ahead in the future. Thus, the verse means that man knowingly rejects what lies ahead — Qiyamah (Resurrection) — simply because he does not want to give up his sinful desires.

(75:5) But man desires to persist in his evil ways.[5]

Ala-Maududi

(75:5) But man desires to persist in his evil ways.[5]

5. In this brief sentence the real disease of the deniers of the Hereafter has been clearly diagnosed. What makes them deny the Hereafter is not, in fact, their regarding the Resurrection and Hereafter as impossible but they deny it because acceptance of the Hereafter inevitably imposes certain moral restrictions on them, which they detest. They desire that they should continue roaming in the world at will as they have been roaming before. They should have full freedom to go on committing whatever injustice, dishonesty, sin and wickedness that they have been committing before, and there should be no deterrent to obstruct their freedom and to warn them that one day they will have to appear and render an account of their deeds before their God. Therefore, it is not their intellect which is hindering them from believing in the Hereafter but their desires of the self.

(5) But man desires to continue in sin.[1801]

[1801]- Literally, "to sin ahead of him." This refers to the disbeliever, who denies the Day of Account.
