📖 Commentary of Verse 12 (Surah At-Tur)

12. And those who are playing in idle discourses [11].

[11] Idle Discourses and Distractions

  • This verse refers to those who engage in idle discussions, whether in matters of infidelity, polytheism, or worldly distractions that keep them away from Allah.

  • It teaches us that anything that diverts us from remembering Allah or performing our duties to Him is mere sport and idle avocation, serving no true purpose in the grand scheme of life.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Tur verse 12 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Tur ayat 1 which provides the complete commentary from verse 1 through 16.

(52:12) and amuse themselves with vain argumentation.[9]

Ala-Maududi

(52:12) and amuse themselves with vain argumentation.[9]

9. It means that they are mocking and ridiculing the news of Resurrection, Hereafter, Heaven and Hell when they hear it from the Prophet (peace be upon him), and instead of considering it seriously they are disputing it only for fun and amusement. Their discussions of the Hereafter are not meant to understand the reality, but only to amuse themselves, and they do not at all realize the fate for which they arc destined.

(12) Who are in [empty] discourse amusing themselves.
