📖 Commentary of Verse 37 (Surah At-Tur)

"Or, have they treasures of your Lord with them? Or, have they been promised [44] the authority of some treasures?"

✅ [44] Refutation of Their Objections

  • The disbelievers question why the Prophet ﷺ was chosen over them, as if they hold the authority to decide who should be a prophet.

  • Allah refutes this by stating that they do not have the keys to Allah’s treasures and cannot appoint a prophet at their will.

  • Allah Almighty is the Master and absolute authority, and He grants bounties to whomever He wills.

  • The disbelievers have no right to object to Allah’s divine wisdom in choosing His messengers.

Please refer to Surah Tur ayat 35 which provides the complete commentary from verse 35 through 43.

(52:37) Or do they have your Lord’s treasures in their keeping? Or have absolute authority over them?[29]

Ala-Maududi

(52:37) Or do they have your Lord’s treasures in their keeping? Or have absolute authority over them?[29]

29. This is an answer to the objection of the disbelievers of Makkah who said: Why had Muhammad (peace be upon him), son of Abdullah, only been appointed a Messenger? The answer implies this: Somebody in any case had to be appointed a Messenger in order to deliver the people from their error of serving others than Allah. Now the question is: Who should decide whom Allah should appoint His Messenger and whom He should not? If these people refuse to accept the Messenger appointed by Allah, it means that either they regard themselves as the masters of the world or they presume that the world may belong to Allah, but it should be ruled by them.

(37) Or have they the depositories [containing the provision] of your Lord? Or are they the controllers [of them]?
