📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Ahqaf – Verse 18

These are they against whom the sentence (of Allah) has already become due [53], along with jinns and mankind who had gone before them. Certainly, they were the losers [54] to perish.

✅ [53] The Verdict of Destruction for the Disbelievers

This refers to those rebellious individuals—like the disrespectful child in the previous verse—upon whom the Divine sentence of punishment has already been passed. Their fate will be joined with earlier disbelieving communities, including both jinn and human beings who rejected faith.

This teaches us that on the Day of Judgement, people will be grouped according to belief, not blood. Believers will be with believers, and disbelievers with disbelievers. May Allah grant us resurrection among the righteous.
It also implies that even non-believing children of believers will not be grouped with their righteous parents, but with those who share their disbelief—just as Kanaan, the son of Prophet Nuh (AS), was destroyed with the disbelievers despite his blood relation.

✅ [54] The Ultimate Loss

To be resurrected among the wicked is in itself a sign of ultimate loss. These individuals are counted among the utter failures of the Hereafter, destined to perish eternally for choosing disbelief and rejecting truth.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Ahqaf verse 18 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Ahqaf ayat 17 which provides the complete commentary from verse 17 through 20.

(46:18) It is against such that Allah’s sentence (of punishment) has become due. They will join the communities of humans and jinn that have preceded them. Verily all of them will court utter loss.[22]

Ala-Maududi

(46:18) It is against such that Allah’s sentence (of punishment) has become due. They will join the communities of humans and jinn that have preceded them. Verily all of them will court utter loss.[22]

22. Here, two types of the character have been placed side by side and the listeners are asked the silent question as to which of them is better. At that time both these types of character practically existed in the society, and it was not at all difficult for the people to know where they could find the first type of the character and where the second. This is the answer to this saying of the chiefs of the Quraish: If it had been any good to believe in this Book, these few youngsters and slaves would not have believed in it before they did. In the light of this answer everyone could see for himself as to what was the character of the believers and what of the unbelievers.

(18) Those are the ones upon whom the word [i.e., decree] has come into effect, [who will be] among nations which had passed on before them of jinn and men. Indeed, they [all] were losers.
