Transliteration:( Fasbir kamaa sabara ulul 'azmi minar Rusuli wa laa tasta'jil lahum; ka annahum Yawma yarawna maa yoo'adoona lam yalbasooo illaa saa'atam min nahaar; balaagh; fahal yuhlaku illal qawmul faasiqoon (section 4) )
"So be patient, as had the resolute [96] Messengers. And do not be in haste [97] about them. On that day [98] they will see the penalty, which they were promised [99]. It shall be as if they had not stayed in the world but for an hour of a single day. This (warning) is conveyed. Then, who shall be destroyed, except the disobedient people?"
The five resolute Messengers (Ulul 'Azm) are:
Hazrat Nuh, Hazrat Ibrahim, Hazrat Musa, Hazrat 'Isa and our Holy Prophet ﷺ.
Although all Prophets possess high status and patience, these five are granted a rank of distinct honour.
Among them, the Holy Prophet ﷺ is the most exalted, embodying unmatched patience and perseverance.
The infidels repeatedly demanded punishment, mocking the warnings.
The Holy Prophet ﷺ is instructed not to hasten their end—divine retribution will surely arrive, in its appointed time.
This refers either to:
The Day of Judgement,
Punishment at death, or
The torment of the grave.
Among these, the punishment of the Hereafter is the most fitting interpretation here.
When they witness the promised punishment, they will feel as though their entire worldly life was just an hour of a single day.
This highlights how temporary the pleasures of the world are in comparison to the severity and permanence of the Hereafter.
Only the disobedient are destroyed—those who persist in defiance despite repeated warnings.
This verse closes Surah Al-Ahqaf with a message of perseverance, showing that ultimate destruction is only for those who reject truth and remain arrogant, while those who follow guidance will be rewarded.
The tafsir of Surah Ahqaf verse 35 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Ahqaf ayat 33 which provides the complete commentary from verse 33 through 35.
(46:35) So bear with patience, (O Prophet), even as the Messengers endowed with firmness of resolve[37] (before you) bore with patience, and do not be hasty in their regard. The Day when they see what they had been warned against they will feel as though they had remained in the world no more than an hour of a day. (The Truth has been conveyed.) Will any, then, suffer perdition except those who disobey?
37. That is, just as the Prophets before you went on enduring with patience and ceaseless struggle the indifference, opposition, resistance and persecutions of their people for years, so should you also do the same, and do not entertain the idea that either the people should believe in you immediately or if they do not believe, Allah should visit them with His torment.
[1490]- i.e., for Allāh's punishment of the disbelievers.
