(34) And the Day those who disbelieved are exposed to the Fire [it will be said], "Is this not the truth?" They will say, "Yes, by our Lord." He will say, "Then taste the punishment for what you used to deny."[1489] (Saheen International Translation)

📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Ahqaf – Verse 34

"And on the Day when the infidels shall be exposed before the fire, it will be said to them: 'Is this not the truth [94]?' They will say: 'Why not, it is so by our Lord'. It will be said to them: 'Taste then the punishment as the award of your infidelity [95]'."

✅ [94] Question for Disgrace, Not Inquiry

When the disbelievers are led to Hell, they will be made to stand at its edge, and the angels will question them:
"Is this (Hell) not real?"

  • This question is not for information, but to humiliate and disgrace them, showing that what they used to mock has now materialized.

  • The use of the word "exposed" (i.e., shown before the fire) highlights this moment of terror and shame before actual punishment.

✅ [95] Infidelity: The Root Cause of Eternal Punishment

This verse clarifies that the primary reason for their punishment is infidelity (kufr).

  • Their evil deeds are secondary, but their denial of truth is what earns them eternal Hell.

  • In contrast, sinful believers may also enter Hell, but only temporarily.

  • Hence, there is no contradictioninfidels remain eternally, while believers are eventually forgiven through divine mercy.

This verse reminds us that belief is the foundational criterion for salvation, and denial despite clear truth leads to disgrace and destruction.
