Commentary of Verse 29 (Surah Ar-Rahman)

“All that are in the heavens and the earth beg [26] from Him. Every day He has a work [27].”

✅ [26] Everything Seeks from Allah

This verse highlights that all of creation, whether in the heavens or the earth, constantly seeks its needs from Allah Almighty. Every creature, from humans to angels, from the believers to the disbelievers, relies on Allah for sustenance and guidance. Some seek from Allah the blessings of this world, while others seek the rewards of the hereafter. In reality, everyone is in need of Allah’s mercy and provision. The verse stresses that seeking from Allah—whether through the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him), or seeking material or spiritual sustenance—is fundamentally seeking from Allah alone, as He is the true source of all bounty.

✅ [27] Allah's Continuous Work

This verse also reinforces that Allah is never idle. Every day, Allah is engaged in a divine work, demonstrating His power and control over all aspects of creation. Allah’s attributes are ever-present, and His actions are ceaseless. The verse specifically refutes the Jewish belief that Allah takes a rest on the Sabbath, showing that Allah is always at work, governing and directing the affairs of the universe. He honors some and brings disgrace to others based on His wisdom and will, further emphasizing His omnipotence. This verse reminds us of Allah’s constant presence and active role in the world.

Please refer to Surah Rahman ayat 26 which provides the complete commentary from verse 26 through 30.

(55:29) All in the heavens and the earth entreat Him for their needs; a new, mighty task engages Him each day.[27]

Ala-Maududi

(55:29) All in the heavens and the earth entreat Him for their needs; a new, mighty task engages Him each day.[27]

27. That is, He is continuously and endlessly functioning in this universe and creating countless new things with new and yet new forms and designs and qualities, He is giving death to one and life to another, exalting one and debasing another, causing one to recover and another to remain ill, rescuing a drowning one and drowning a floating one. He is providing sustenance to countless creatures in a variety of ways, His world never stays in the same state: it is changing every moment and its Creator arranges it in a new state and fashion every time, which is different from every previous form and fashion and state.

(29) Whoever is within the heavens and earth asks Him; every day He is in [i.e., bringing about] a matter.[1598]

[1598]- For each of His creatures.
