Transliteration:( Yursalu 'alaikumaa shuwaazum min naarinw-wa nuhaasun falaa tantasiraan )
“The flames of smokeless fire and flameless black smoke [31] shall be sent on both of you, but you will not be able to defend [32] yourselves.”
This verse describes the severe punishment awaiting the disbelievers. The flames of smokeless fire refer to a fire that burns without emitting light, while the flameless black smoke refers to a smoke that is dark and devoid of any light. This imagery highlights the intense and unbearable nature of the punishment. The mention of smokeless fire and flameless smoke serves as a warning for humanity and jinn to act righteously, as the consequences of sin are severe.
The verse further emphasizes that those who are subjected to this punishment will be utterly powerless. They will have no means of defending themselves, nor will they be able to seek help from others. This underscores the helplessness of the oppressors and sinners in the face of Allah’s wrath. The oppressed will be unable to take revenge, and no one will be able to aid each other in Hell.
The tafsir of Surah Ar-Rahman verse 35 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Rahman ayat 31 which provides the complete commentary from verse 31 through 36.
(55:35) (If you so venture) a flame of fire and smoke[33] shall be lashed at you, which you shall be unable to withstand.
33. The word shuwaz, as used in the original, means the pure, smokeless flame, and nuhas is the gross smoke without a flame. These two things, one after the other, will be let loose upon the men and jinn, when they try to escape the accountability of Allah.
