📖 Commentary of Verse 44 (Surah Hud)

44. But they revolted against the Command of their Lord. Then a thunderbolt [50] overtook them while they were seeing it.

[50] The Thunderbolt of Divine Punishment

  • The people of Thamud revolted against the command of their Lord despite the clear warning from Prophet Saleh (Peace be upon him).

  • The thunderbolt that struck them was the terrifying sound created by Hazrat Jibraeel (Peace be upon him). This sound was so devastating that it tore their hearts asunder.

  • The intensity of the sound was so great that it has been described as a "thunderbolt," symbolizing the overwhelming and destructive force of divine punishment.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Ad-Dhariyat verse 44 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Dhariyat ayat 38 which provides the complete commentary from verse 38 through 46.

(51:44) But they brazenly disobeyed their Lord’s command, and then a sudden chastisement[41] overtook them while they looked on.

Ala-Maududi

(51:44) But they brazenly disobeyed their Lord’s command, and then a sudden chastisement[41] overtook them while they looked on.

41. Different words have been used for this torment at different places in the Quran. Somewhere it has been called rajafah (a frightful and shocking calamity), somewhere saihah (a crashing and thundering disaster), somewhere taghiyah (a most severe affliction) and here it has been described as saiqah (a calamity that strikes like a thunderbolt). Probably this torment was like an earthquake which was also accompanied by a terrible noise.

(44) But they were insolent toward the command of their Lord, so the thunderbolt seized them while they were looking on.
