"And when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was a disease [27] said; 'Allah and His Messenger promised us no victory, but a delusion' [28]."
This verse exposes the hypocrites, who outwardly professed Islam but were inwardly disbelievers. Their hearts were plagued with doubt and insincerity, constantly wavering between belief and disbelief. Their inconsistency showed that their faith was never firmly rooted.
When they saw the massive alliance of the enemy forces in the Battle of the Trench, Mu'tah ibn Qasheer mockingly remarked that the Holy Prophet ﷺ promised victories over Rome and Persia, yet they were now trapped in Madina and unable to confront the enemy. This comment was a reflection of their deep-rooted skepticism and a complete denial of Divine promises, which several others among the hypocrites also agreed with.
Such statements were not only faithless but also a direct affront to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, showing their true nature in a time of crisis.
