Transliteration:( Wa laqad kaanoo 'aahadul laaha min qablu laa yuwal loonal adbaar; wa kaana 'ahdul laahi mas'oolaa )

15.And certainly they had already pledged with Allah before that, that they would not turn their backs(34). And the pledge with Allah shall be questioned (35).

Surah Al-Ahzab Ayat 15 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi

34. From this we learn that to enter into any covenant with the Holy Prophet is equal to entering into a covenant with Allah Almighty because the Prophet of Allah Almighty is the supreme deputy and an absolute authority. likewise, the covenant with your Sheikh Peer) is a covenant with the Holy Propliet .صلى الله عليه واله وسلم In this, proof for taking allegiance on the hand of the Murshid is huded.

35. “The hand of Allah is over their hands" (S48 V10). This is the very essence and reality of that you make a firm promise . through any pious person to remain faithful to Allah Almighty, and thereafter fulfill these promises. Fulfilling them is just as important as fulfilling the covenant with Allah Almighty. The Bani Haritha and Bani Salmah had, after the battle, taken a pledge with the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه واله وسلم that although they had run away from the Battle of Uhud, in future they would never run away from any confrontation with the enemy But, today they had broken their pledge.

35. This means that just as there will be reckoning and questioning regarding things done by you, in the like manner, there will be reckoning about your promises and pledges.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Ahzab verse 15 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Ahzab ayat 14 which provides the complete commentary from verse 14 through 17.

(33:15) They had earlier covenanted with Allah that they would not turn their backs in flight. And a covenant made with Allah must needs be answered for.[27]

27. That is, they had felt regret at the weakness they had shown on the occasion of the battle of Uhud and pledged to Allah that they would compensate for their error in any trial that they would confront in the future. But Allah cannot be deceived by empty words. He puts to one or the other test everyone who makes a pledge with Him so that his sincerity of intention or otherwise is found out. Therefore, just after two years of the battle of Uhud, He made them confront an even more serious danger and discovered how far they were sincere in their pledge.
