📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Ahzab – Verse 58

"And those who hurt [171] the believing men and believing women without any reason, they are guilty of false association and an open sin [172]. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)"

✅ [171] Hurting Believers Without Just Cause

This verse was revealed regarding certain hypocrites who caused harm to Hazrat Ali al-Murtaza (May Allah be pleased with him). Scholars explain that it is forbidden to harm not only human beings—especially believers—but even animals.

Those who hurt the progeny of the Holy Prophet ﷺ are particularly blameworthy, as they hold a very lofty status (referred to in Arabic as Ahazumul Irtaun).

✅ [172] Two Key Rulings Derived

From this verse, two important rulings emerge:

  1. Causing pain to believers may sometimes be valid (e.g., when administering justified punishment for wrongdoing), but it is sinful when done without any reason. However, when it comes to the Holy Prophet, causing him pain is wrong under any circumstances. The verse uses the phrase "without doing anything" to emphasize this restriction clearly.

  2. Harming a believer without reason is a major transgression, but not disbelief. In contrast, harming a Prophet of Allah is considered a severe form of infidelity. That’s why this verse labels unjust harm to believers as calumny and open sin, while the previous verse (57) used stronger terms like curse and degrading punishment for those who harm Allah and His Messenger.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Ahzab verse 58 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Ahzab ayat 57 which provides the complete commentary from verse 57 through 58.

(33:58) Those who cause hurt to believing men and to believing women have invited upon themselves a calumny[109] and a manifest sin.

Ala-Maududi

(33:58) Those who cause hurt to believing men and to believing women have invited upon themselves a calumny[109] and a manifest sin.

109. This verse determines the definition of slander. It is to ascribe a fault to a person which he does not have, or an error which he has not committed. The Prophet (peace be upon him) also has explained it. According to Abu Daud and Tirmidhi, when he was asked as to what is ghibat (backbiting), he replied: “It is to make mention of your brother in a manner derogatory to him.” The questioner said, “And if the fault is there in my brother?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: “If the fault that you mentioned is there in him, you backbite him; if it is not there, you slandered him.” Such an act is not only a moral sin, which will entail punishment in the Hereafter, but this verse also requires that also in the law of an Islamic State false allegation should be held as a culpable offense.

(58) And those who harm believing men and believing women for [something] other than what they have earned [i.e., deserved] have certainly borne upon themselves a slander and manifest sin.
