Transliteration:( Fartaqib Yawma ta'tis samaaa'u bi dukhaanin mubeen )
"So wait for the day when the heavens will bring a clear smoke [8]."
This verse issues a stern warning to the disbelievers who continue in doubt and heedlessness. It commands them to “wait”—not as a passive suggestion, but as a form of divine challenge, pointing to a specific punishment or sign that is certain to appear.
The phrase “a clear smoke” refers to a visible torment that will descend from the sky. According to many commentators, this event occurred during the time of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, when the Quraysh were struck by a famine, causing intense hunger. Their eyes perceived a veil of smoke in the sky due to extreme exhaustion and starvation.
Others interpret this “smoke” as a future sign of the Day of Judgment, one of the major events that will precede the final Hour, as mentioned in other parts of the Qur’an.
In either case, the “clear smoke” is a symbol of unmistakable punishment, meant to jolt the arrogant and heedless into realizing the reality of divine power and consequence.
