📖 Commentary of Surah Ad-Dukhan – Verse 4

"Therein all matters of wisdom [2] are sorted out for Decree."

✅ [2] The Annual Divine Decree

On this momentous night, which is referred to as Laylat al-Qadr, every affair of importance—such as sustenance, life, death, honour, and disgrace—is decreed for the coming year. These matters are extracted from the Preserved Tablet (Loh-e-Mahfooz) and distributed to the respective angels of responsibility.

For example, the Angel of Death is given a list of those souls whose time will come to an end that year. Similarly, angels responsible for rain, provision, or protection receive their assignments for the year ahead.

This detailed distribution of decree shows that while Allah alone possesses ultimate knowledge and control, the angels are made aware of what they need to implement for the coming year.

✅ The Prophet’s Knowledge in Light of Divine Will

This verse also sheds light on a deeper theological point: If angels can be informed of decrees a year in advance, then there is no contradiction in believing that Allah can grant the Holy Prophet ﷺ special knowledge, even about what is to come.

Therefore, bestowing knowledge of the unseen upon the Prophet ﷺ by the will of Allah is not only possible but supported by the logic of this divine process. There should be no objection if Allah chooses to honour His Messenger ﷺ with complete awareness of such decrees, just as He informs His angels.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Ad-Dukhan verse 4 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Dukhan ayat 1 which provides the complete commentary from verse 1 through 8.

(44:4) (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined[2]

Ala-Maududi

(44:4) (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined[2]

2. The word amr-in-hakim as used in the text has two meanings:

(1) That the command is entirely based on wisdom: there is no likelihood of any error or weakness in it.

(2) That it is a firm and stable decision: it lies in no one’s power to change it.

(4) Therein [i.e., on that night] is made distinct[1460] every precise matter -

[1460]- Or "is separated" or "apportioned," from what is inscribed in the Preserved Slate. The angels record and descend with whatever Allāh has decreed for the coming year.
