📖 Commentary of Surah Ad-Dukhan – Verse 18

"Saying: 'Hand [18] over to me the devotees of Allah. Indeed, I am a Messenger, faithful to my trust.'"

✅ [18] The Demand for Freedom and the Role of the Prophet

This verse recounts the firm and dignified demand made by Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) to Pharaoh: to release the Israelites, the devoted servants of Allah, from their bondage and oppression. By saying “Hand over to me the devotees of Allah”, Musa was asking for their freedom so he could lead them back to their original homeland.

The Israelites originally belonged to the region of Syria (Shaam), but during the time of Prophet Yusuf (peace be upon him), they had migrated to Egypt and settled there as guests or travelers. Over time, they were turned into slaves by the Egyptians, and subjected to harsh treatment under Pharaoh’s rule.

This verse also teaches a deeper lesson: the mercy of Allah often reaches the people through His prophets. It was through Prophet Musa’s mission and supplication that the Israelites were destined to be freed and guided.

The second part of Musa’s statement, “Indeed, I am a Messenger, faithful to my trust,” affirms his status as a divinely appointed envoy, committed to truth, justice, and fulfilling Allah’s command. His demand was not political but spiritually mandated, emphasizing the trustworthiness and nobility of prophetic missions.

(44:18) (and said):[15] “Deliver to me Allah’s servants.[16] I am a trustworthy Messenger to you,[17]

15. One should note that the sayings of the Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) being cited here, are not parts of a continuous address delivered by him at any one time, but they are a summary in a few sentences of what he said to Pharaoh and his courtiers on different occasions during many years. For the details, see (Surah Al-Aaraf, Ayat 103-136); (Surah Younus, Ayat 75-92); (Surah TaHa, Ayat 45-76); (Surah Ash-Shuara, Ayat 10-68); (Surah An-Naml, Ayat 7-14); (Surah Al-Qasas, Ayat 32-42); (Surah Al-Mumin, Ayat 23-46); (Surah Az-Zukhruf, Ayat 46-56); and the corresponding E.Ns.

16. That is, leave the children of Israel to go with me. This demand is synonymous with the demand made in (Surah Al-Aaraf, Ayat 105); (Surah TaHa, Ayat 47)and (Surah Ash-Shura, Ayat 17). Another translation that has been reported from Abdullah ibn Abbas is: Servants of Allah, fulfill my right, i.e. accept what I say, believe in me, follow my guidance. This is my right on you from Allah. The following sentence: I am a trustworthy Messenger to you is more in keeping with the second meaning.

17. That is, I am a reliable Messenger: I do not forge anything from myself, nor am I the one who would present something based on personal interest or desire, or forge a command or law, in the name of Allah. Rest assured that I shall convey to you intact only that which my Sender has commanded. It should be noted that these two sentences belong to the time when the Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) first started preaching Allah’s message.

(18) [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allāh.[1461] Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger,"

[1461]- i.e., the Children of Israel.
