📖 Commentary of Surah Ad-Dukhan – Verse 8

"None is to be worshipped but He. He gives life and causes death [5]. He is your Lord and Lord of your forefathers."

✅ [5] The Giver of Both Physical and Spiritual Life

This verse reaffirms pure monotheism by declaring that only Allah is worthy of worship, and it further establishes His absolute control over life and death.

The phrase “He gives life and causes death” refers to physical life and death, which are solely in Allah’s command. The soul is the means by which physical life is sustained, and it is Allah who breathes it into existence.

Additionally, the spiritual life—true guidance, inner awakening, and eternal success—comes through faith, which was sent via the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Just as the soul gives biological life, faith grants spiritual vitality, leading to a purposeful and enlightened existence.

✅ Our Physical and Spiritual Lineage

The verse ends by stating that Allah is the Lord of both you and your forefathers, establishing a connection across generations.

Our physical forefather is Sayyiduna Adam عليه السلام, from whom all human beings descend. However, our spiritual lineage is linked to the Holy Prophet ﷺ and his Noble Companions, who brought the message of truth and demonstrated the way of true submission.

Recognizing both physical roots and spiritual heritage helps one understand the complete picture of human origin and purpose under the Divine Lordship of Allah.

Please refer to Surah Dukhan ayat 1 which provides the complete commentary from verse 1 through 8.

(44:8) There is no god but He:[7] He gives life and causes death.[8] He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore.[9]

Ala-Maududi

(44:8) There is no god but He:[7] He gives life and causes death.[8] He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore.[9]

7. The real God Who alone has the right that He should be worshiped and served.

8. That is, there is no god other than Allah, nor can there be. Therefore, it is against reason that you should disdain the worship of Him Who breathed life into dead matter and made you a living man. And Who possesses full powers to keep you alive as long as He likes and bring your life to an end whenever He likes. So, it is against reason that you serve any other than Him, or start worshiping others besides Him.

9. There is a subtle allusion in it to this: He is also Lord of those of your ancestors who took other gods besides Allah; they had not done the right thing by giving up their real Lord and serving others that you should be justified in imitating them and regard their conduct as an argument for the soundness of your creed. They ought to have served only Him, because He alone is their Lord.

(8) There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers.
