📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 40

"Ask them which of them will guarantee that?"

[42] The Authority of Allah Over Rewards and Punishments

  • In this verse, Allah challenges the disbelievers, asking them who will guarantee their claim to Paradise or eternal reward, as they assume based on their worldly position or false hopes. It makes it clear that Allah alone has the authority over rewards and punishments, and there is no amnesty for the disbelievers.

  • This verse highlights the fundamental difference between the deeds of a believer and the disbeliever. The believer is supported by Allah’s mercy and guidance, while the disbeliever is without support or guarantee of salvation.

Ibn-Kathir

(68:40) Ask them: “Which of them can guarantee that?[22]

Ala-Maududi

(68:40) Ask them: “Which of them can guarantee that?[22]

22. Zaeem in Arabic is used for a person who stands a surety on behalf of another, or is a spokesman of others. Thus, the verse means to ask: Which of you will come forward and say that he has made such and such a covenant with Allah on your behalf.

(40) Ask them which of them, for that [claim], is responsible.
