📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 43

"Their eyes shall be cast down, and humiliation shall overtake them. But verily, they were called upon to prostrate themselves, indeed, while they were all safe and sound."

[48] Shame and Humiliation

  • On the Day of Judgment, the eyes of the disbelievers will be cast down out of shame and remorse for not having worshipped Allah properly. They will be unable to endure the power of Allah's Divine Right, as they realize their neglect of the truth.

  • This verse indicates that while the believers will be able to behold the Vision of Allah, the hypocrites will not experience this divine mercy. Instead, they will face humiliation for their failure to heed Allah’s calls in this world.

[49] Signs of Disgrace

  • The faces of the disbelievers will turn black, and their bodies will bear signs of disgrace and misery, making their enmity towards the truth and their rejection of Allah apparent. This reflects the consequences of their disbelief and the punishment they will face for their actions.

[50] The Call to Prayer and the Hypocrite's Failure

  • The verse refers to how the Muazzin would call the people to prayer (Salat) by saying "Hayya 'ala al-Salah" (Come to prayer), but many of the disbelievers and hypocrites would ignore the call, neglecting the obligation of prayer despite being safe and sound in their health.

  • Congregational prayer is obligatory, and those who refuse to attend the mosque without a valid excuse are considered hypocrites. The verse serves as a warning for neglecting such an important duty.

[51] The Importance of Prayer and Worship

  • The verse clarifies that there are valid excuses for missing congregational prayers, such as sickness or other legitimate reasons. In such cases, one is not held accountable. However, neglecting prayer during times of good health or without a valid reason is a great loss and a sign of spiritual deprivation.

Please refer to Surah Qalam ayat 42 which provides the complete commentary from verse 42 through 47.

(68:43) Their eyes shall be downcast and ignominy shall overwhelm them. For when they were safe and sound, they were summoned to prostrate themselves, (and they refused).[25]

Ala-Maududi

(68:43) Their eyes shall be downcast and ignominy shall overwhelm them. For when they were safe and sound, they were summoned to prostrate themselves, (and they refused).[25]

25. It means: On the Resurrection Day it will be openly and publicly demonstrated as to who in the world had actually worshiped Allah and who was disinclined to do so. For this purpose the people will be called upon to prostrate themselves before Allah. Then, those who had been sincerely worshiping Allah in the world would prostrate themselves, and those who had declined to bow before Him in the world would be unable to do so. It will become impossible for them to put up a false show of being worshipers. Therefore, they will remain standing, degraded and downcast with shame.

(43) Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound.[1733]
