Transliteration:( Khaashi'atan absaaruhum tarhaquhum zillatunw wa qad kaanoo yud'awna ilassujoodi wa hum saalimoon )

43. Their eyes shall be cast (48) down and humiliation (49) shall overtake them. But verily, they were called upon to prostrate (50) themselves, indeed, while they were all safe and sound (51).

Surah Al-Qalam Ayat 43 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi

48. Due to shame and remorse, or due to being unable to withstand the power of Divine Right (Tafseer Roohul Mu'ani, Azizi). This tells us that the believers will behold the Vision of Allah Almighty. But, not the hypocrites.

49. Their faces will turn black. In fact on their entire body signs of disgrace and misery will appear through which their enmity will become apparent. May Allah give us protection!

50.That when the Muazzin was calling out AYYA ALASSALAH: Come towards Prayer. they were not coming for Salaah. This tells us at congregation, too, is obligatory, and being sent in the mosque too is obligatory. To perform Salaah at home without any valid ason is sign of a hypocrite, and a this is its punishment.

51. This tells us that during valid reason and sickness, congregation and not going to the mosque is excused and one will not be held responsible for its default. Not performing ibaadat during the state of good health is depriving oneself of good fortune.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Qalam verse 43 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Qalam ayat 42 which provides the complete commentary from verse 42 through 47.

(68:43) Their eyes shall be downcast and ignominy shall overwhelm them. For when they were safe and sound, they were summoned to prostrate themselves, (and they refused).[25]

25. It means: On the Resurrection Day it will be openly and publicly demonstrated as to who in the world had actually worshiped Allah and who was disinclined to do so. For this purpose the people will be called upon to prostrate themselves before Allah. Then, those who had been sincerely worshiping Allah in the world would prostrate themselves, and those who had declined to bow before Him in the world would be unable to do so. It will become impossible for them to put up a false show of being worshipers. Therefore, they will remain standing, degraded and downcast with shame.
