📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 51

"And the infidels would strike you with their angry glances when they heard the Quran and said: 'Surely, he is insane.'"

[63] The Evil Eye and Protection of the Prophet

  • In Arabia, some people were believed to possess the evil eye. If they looked at someone with envy or malice, especially after having been deprived of food, they could cause harm to the person they looked at. The disbelievers of Makkah tried to use these people, bribing them and keeping them hungry for days, to cast the evil eye on Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) while he was reciting the Qur'an.

  • However, Allah protected His Beloved Prophet from their evil influence. This verse was revealed in response to this incident, emphasizing that the Prophet (PBUH) was safeguarded by divine protection, and no harm could come to him.

[64] The Evil Eye and Its Impact

  • The verse teaches two key points:

    1. The evil eye is indeed a real phenomenon that can cause harm, but its power is ultimately controlled by Allah.

    2. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) is so beloved to Allah that He protects him from the harm of such forces. Even though the disbelievers tried to harm him with their evil eye, Allah’s protection ensured that the Prophet remained safe.

  • This verse serves as a means of protection from the evil eye for all believers, reminding them that through divine protection, the harm of others’ malice can be averted.

[65] The Insult of Calling the Prophet "Insane"

  • The disbelievers called Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) "insane" because they could not comprehend the profound wisdom and truth in his words. They accused him of being mad, which reflects their ignorance and lack of understanding.

(68:51) When the unbelievers hear this Exhortation, they look at you as though they would knock you off your feet with their (hostile) glances.[35] They say: “Surely he is afflicted with madness”;

35. “Would trip you up”: “Would eat you up with their eyes”. For a similar expression of the Makkan disbelievers’ rage and fury against the Holy Prophet, see also (surah Bani Israil, ayat 73-77).
