Transliteration:( Law laaa an tadaara kahoo ni'matum mir rabbihee lanubiza bil'araaa'i wa huwa mazmoom )
"Were it not so that the favour from his Lord had overtaken him; he would certainly have been thrown upon the bare tract of the land, while he was condemned (by his people)."
The verse highlights that Prophet Yunus (PBUH) would have faced severe consequences if not for the mercy of Allah. After leaving his people in haste and being swallowed by the fish, it was Allah’s mercy that saved him. Inside the belly of the fish, Yunus (PBUH) engaged in glorification (Tasbeeh) and dua (supplication), which turned the fish’s belly into a bright room for him, filled with spiritual light. This miraculous environment allowed him to grow in peace and reflection.
The verse also refers to how Allah’s mercy caused the fish’s belly to become a place of refuge for Yunus (PBUH). The fish, which could have been his grave, became a safe haven where greenery grew and animals were at his service. All of these were acts of divine mercy granted to him during his time of trial.

Please refer to Surah Qalam ayat 48 which provides the complete commentary from verse 48 through 52.
(68:49) had his Lord not bestowed His favour upon him, he would have been cast upon that barren shore (and would have remained there) in disgrace.[34]
34. When this verse is read with (Surah As-Saaffat, Ayat 142-146), one learns that at the time the Prophet Jonah (peace be upon him) was caused to be swallowed by the fish, he was blameworthy. But when he glorified Allah and confessed his fault, although he was thrown out from the belly of the fish on a bare beach in a state of sickness, he was not blameworthy at that time. Allah by His mercy caused a creeper to grow over him so that its leaves should provide him shade and its fruit food and drink.
[1735]- But instead, Allāh accepted his repentance and provided means for his recovery. See 37:139-148.
