📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 44

"So leave Me with those who reject this announcement. We shall overtake them to ruin step-by-step, which they do not perceive."

[52] Freedom of Belief and Lack of Compulsion

  • This verse indicates that Allah does not compel anyone to accept faith. Those who reject the message of Islam are allowed to continue on their path, as there is no compulsion in religion (as stated in Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:256). Allah gives people the freedom to choose their beliefs, and they are free to reject or accept the truth.

  • However, their rejection does not escape Allah's plan for them, and He allows them to continue their worldly lives, even though they are headed towards ruin.

[53] Worldly Favors Leading to Neglect

  • Despite their infidelity and sins, the disbelievers may experience worldly comforts and favors, which may deceive them into thinking they are in a favorable condition. These blessings do not mean they are free from consequences. Instead, they are stepping closer to their ruin, as these worldly comforts lead them to become more negligent and indulge in sins.

  • This shows that wealth or worldly success, if it leads to neglecting Allah's commands, is actually a form of punishment from Allah. It keeps people away from the remembrance of Allah and spiritual growth, making them more distant from the truth.

(68:44) So leave Me, (O Prophet), to deal with him who gives the lie to this Discourse.[26] We shall draw them little by little (to their undoing) in a way that they will not know.[27]

Ala-Maududi

(68:44) So leave Me, (O Prophet), to deal with him who gives the lie to this Discourse.[26] We shall draw them little by little (to their undoing) in a way that they will not know.[27]

26. That is, do not worry yourself as to how to deal with them, it is for Me to see how to chastise them.

27. A form of leading somebody to ruin in imperceptible ways is that an enemy of the truth and wicked person may be blessed in the world, and be granted health, wealth, children and worldly successes, by which he may be deluded into believing that whatever he is doing, he is doing well and right. There is nothing wrong with his acts and deeds. Thus, he may go on getting more and more deeply involved in enmity of the truth and wickedness and rebellious conduct and may not realize that the blessings he is being favored with are not a reward but, in fact, a means of his own ruin.

(44) So leave Me, [O Muḥammad], with [the matter of] whoever denies this statement [i.e., the Qur’ān]. We will progressively lead them [to punishment] from where they do not know.[1734]

[1734]- Allāh will increase His favors to them in this world by way of trial, whereby they will sink deeper into sin and thus into destruction.
