📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Fath – Verse 28

"It is He Who sent His Messenger [86] with guidance and the Religion of Truth that He may make it to prevail over all other religions [87]. And Allah suffices as a witness. [88]"

✅ 86. The Messenger — A Manifestation of Divine Splendor

This verse highlights the exalted status of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who is the most noble creation of Allah. Through him, the glory, perfection, and majesty of Allah becomes visible. Just as the moon reflects the sun’s light, the Prophet ﷺ reflects the light of divine guidance. The beauty of the Messenger is a reflection of the beauty of the Creator, and knowing him leads to recognition of Allah’s greatness.

✅ 87. Supremacy of Islam Over All Religions

Allah sent the Prophet ﷺ with guidance (the Qur’an) and the religion of truth (Islam) so that it would prevail over all other religions — not just militarily or politically, but in truth, clarity, and permanence. Islam abrogated all previous systems, and its teachings were protected and perfected.

This verse was fulfilled historically through:

  • Victories of the Sahabah

  • Islamic rule spreading across continents

  • Endurance of Islam despite Muslim weakness

To this day, Islam remains the final divine path, and its presence is visible in mosques, pilgrimage, and countless followers worldwide — until the Day of Judgment.

✅ 88. Allah as the Ultimate Witness

Allah Himself is the Witness to both the truth of the Prophet ﷺ and the truth of Islam.

  • The miracles of the Prophet (e.g., rocks glorifying Allah)

  • The Qur’an’s unmatched wisdom

  • The spread of Islam across nations

All these are signs of Allah's testimony.
Just as the Prophet bears witness to Allah’s Oneness (Tawheed), Allah bears witness to the Prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ — both testimonies beautifully merge in Kalimah Tayyibah:

“Lā ilāha illallāh, Muhammadur Rasūlullāh.”

(48:28) He it is Who sent His Messenger with the True Guidance and the Religion of Truth that He may make it prevail over every religion. Sufficient is Allah as a witness (to this).[51]

Ala-Maududi

(48:28) He it is Who sent His Messenger with the True Guidance and the Religion of Truth that He may make it prevail over every religion. Sufficient is Allah as a witness (to this).[51]

51. The reason why this thing has been mentioned here is that when at Hudaibiyah the peace treaty was going to be written down, the disbelievers had objected to the use of the words Rasul-Allah (Messenger of Allah) with the name of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and on their insistence the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself had removed these words from the document. At this Allah says: Our Messenger’s being a Messenger is a reality which remains unaffected whether someone believes in it or not. If some people do not believe in it, they may not, for Allah is enough for a witness over it. Their denial will not change the reality, but the guidance and the true faith which this Messenger (peace be upon him) has brought from Us, shall prevail over all religion, no matter how hard the deniers try to obstruct its progress.

“All religions” implies all those ways of life which include the nature of deen (religion). We have explained it in details in (Surah Az-Zumar, ayat 2) note 3 and (Surah Ash-Shura, ayat 23) note 20. Here what Allah has stated in clear words is: The purpose of the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) appointment as a Prophet was not merely to preach this religion but to make it prevail over all others. In other words, he did not bring this religion so that it might survive in a limited compartment of life, while the rest of the spheres of life, by and large, should remain under the relentless control of some false religion (way of life). But he had brought it so that it should be the dominant way of life and any other religion should survive, if at all it survives, only within the limits in which it allows it to survive. For further explanation, see (Surah Az-Zumar, ayat 29) note 48.

(28) It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion. And sufficient is Allāh as Witness.
