📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Fath – Verse 9

"So that people should believe [20] in Allah and His Messenger, and honor him [21], and that you may glorify Him in the morning and the evening [22]."

✅ [20] Universal Command to Believe

This verse addresses all of creation until the Day of Judgement. Two key principles are drawn from it:

  1. Obedience to the Holy Prophet ﷺ is obligatory upon every creation.

  2. Our faith is dependent on the Prophet's testimony, his glad tidings, and his warnings—but his own faith is not dependent on anyone else's testimony.

✅ [21] Honoring the Holy Prophet ﷺ

From this verse, it is understood that every form of respect that does not contradict Islamic teachings is permissible in honoring the Holy Prophet ﷺ. One must not attribute divinity to him or prostrate before him, but all other expressions of reverence and respect are encouraged.

Imam Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) is a notable example—he never rode a horse in Madina Munawwarah out of reverence for the Prophet ﷺ, showing the depth of permissible honor.

✅ [22] Glorifying Allah Day and Night

This refers to the five daily prayers. The glorification in the morning refers to Fajr Salaah, while the glorification in the evening encompasses the other four daily prayers. Thus, regular establishment of Salah is a form of glorifying Allah continuously.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Fath verse 9 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Fath ayat 8 which provides the complete commentary from verse 8 through 10.

(48:9) so that (all of) you may all believe in Allah and His Messenger, and support him, and revere him, and celebrate Allah’s glory, morning and evening.[16]

Ala-Maududi

(48:9) so that (all of) you may all believe in Allah and His Messenger, and support him, and revere him, and celebrate Allah’s glory, morning and evening.[16]

16. According to some commentators the verse means: “And help the Messenger, and honor him, and glorify Allah morning and evening”, and according to others: “And help Allah, and honor Him and glorify Him morning and evening.”

Glorifying Allah morning and evening does not mean glorifying Him only in the morning and the evening but at all times. It is just like saying about something that it is well-known in the east and the west when one actually means to say that it is well-known everywhere in the world.

(9) That you [people] may believe in Allāh and His Messenger and honor him and respect him [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)] and exalt Him [i.e., Allāh] morning and afternoon.
