📖 Commentary of Verse 21 (Surah Al-Muddaththir)

“Then he looked around.”

The intention behind the gaze matters[17]
This verse refers to Waleed bin Mugheerah, who looked at the Holy Prophet ﷺ, but not with respect or sincerity. Rather, he looked with hatred and arrogance.

Allah (اللَّهُ ) counts it among acts of disbelief
This type of gaze is described by Allah (اللَّهُ ) as a sign of disbelief. It shows that looking at the Prophet ﷺ with evil intent is counted among the actions of kufr.

The gaze of Abu Bakr Siddiq (رضي الله عنه) is worship
On the other hand, when someone looks at the Prophet ﷺ with love and respect, like Abu Bakr Siddiq رضي الله عنه, it becomes an act of worship, and the one who does so can attain the rank of a Companion (Sahabi).

The difference in gaze reflects faith or disbelief
This teaches us that the same act (looking) can either be worship or disbelief, depending on the intention and state of the heart.
