Transliteration:( In haazaaa illaa qawlul bashar )
“This is nothing but the speech of a human.”
✅ The claim of magic as the source of knowledge[18]
In this verse, Waleed bin Mugheerah dismisses the Holy Prophet ﷺ by claiming that the Quran is merely the result of magic learned from some unknown source. He believed that the Prophet ﷺ had used the power of magic to create such an eloquent and powerful speech that would have a deep effect on people's hearts.
✅ Waleed's contradiction and self-deception
However, Waleed himself knew that this claim was false. He was well aware that the Prophet ﷺ had never traveled to study magic, nor were there any magicians in Makkah. The city had no association with the practice of magic, so where and how could the Prophet ﷺ have acquired such knowledge?
✅ The absurdity of the accusation
This reflects the absurdity and contradiction in the arguments made by the disbelievers. Despite the undeniable truth of the Quran's eloquence and divine nature, they could not accept it and resorted to false accusations.
✅ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was divinely inspired
It is clear from this that the Prophet ﷺ did not need magic or any human source for his knowledge. His knowledge came from Allah (اللَّهُ ), the Al-Mighty, and was revealed to him through divine inspiration.
The tafsir of Surah Muddaththir verse 25 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Muddaththir ayat 11 which provides the complete commentary from verse 11 through 30.
(74:25) this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!”[14]
14. The reference is to what happened in the conference of the disbelievers of Makkah. From the details of it that we have given in the introduction, it becomes obvious that this man in his heart had become fully convinced of the Quran’s being divine word, but in order to save his position as a chief of his people, he was not prepared to affirm faith. When in the conference he himself turned down all the accusations that the Quraish chiefs were proposing against the Prophet (peace be upon him), he was compelled to devise an accusation from himself, which could be spread among the Arabs in order to bring a bad name to the Prophet (peace be upon him). Then, the way he struggled against his conscience, and the way he devised an accusation at last after a prolonged mental conflict, has been vividly depicted here.
