📖 Commentary of Verse 34 (Surah Al-Muddaththir)

“And the daybreak when it shines.”

The significance of daybreak[32]

This verse highlights the beauty and importance of the daybreak, which is a powerful creation of Allah (اللَّهُ ). The moon and the transition from night to morning are not merely physical phenomena, but also deeply spiritual symbols. The arrival of the daybreak signifies the end of the darkness of the night, which represents the ignorance or sinfulness in one's heart. The shining morning is a symbol of repentance, forgiveness, and the illumination of the heart with faith.

A time for sincerity and repentance

The last portion of the night is reserved for sincere supplication and repentance, where true devotees of Allah (اللَّهُ ) weep for their shortcomings and seek His mercy. This time is significant for those who strive to purify their hearts and souls. The morning, in turn, marks the emergence of faith in the heart, and it is a time for gratitude to Allah (اللَّهُ ) for His mercy and forgiveness.

The inner transformation symbolized by the night and morning

The transition from night to day also symbolizes the spiritual transformation within a believer. The night represents the darkness of the baser self, which is overcome through self-discipline and repentance. The daybreak signifies the arrival of faith and the light of righteousness, signifying the moral and spiritual renewal that occurs when a believer turns to Allah (اللَّهُ ) with sincerity.

The bounties of the Prophet ﷺ

Both the night and the daybreak are part of the bounties that Allah (اللَّهُ ) granted through the Prophet ﷺ. The guidance brought by the Prophet ﷺ illuminates the hearts of those who accept it, just as the daybreak shines light upon the earth, removing the darkness of the night.
