10. Their messengers said, “Is there any doubt about Allah [24], the Creator of the heavens and the earth [25]? He calls you to forgive you some of your sins [26] and to delay you for an appointed term. They said, ‘You are only human beings like us [27]. 📖 Commentary of Surah Ibrahim – Verse 10

Their messengers said, “Is there any doubt about Allah [24], the Creator of the heavens and the earth [25]? He calls you to forgive you some of your sins [26] and to delay you for an appointed term. They said, ‘You are only human beings like us [27]. You want to turn us away from what our forefathers used to worship [28]. So bring us a clear proof [29].”

✅ [24] Doubting the Prophet is Doubting Allah

From this we learn that to doubt the Prophet is equal to doubting Allah Almighty, just as believing in the Prophet is believing in Allah.

Here, the infidels had doubted the Prophet, which the Qur’an equates with doubting Allah Almighty, because the Prophets are the reflective signs of Allah’s will.
Just as Allah created food and medicine for physical needs, He sent laws of the Qur’an and Islam for spiritual guidance through His Prophet ﷺ. Therefore, rejecting the Prophet is rejecting Allah’s providence.

✅ [25] Call of the Prophet = Call of Allah

This shows that the Prophet’s call is in reality the call of Allah. Though it was the Prophets who conveyed the message, it is said here: “Allah is calling you.”
Hence, obeying the Prophet is equivalent to obeying Allah Almighty.

✅ [26] Partial Forgiveness Through Islam

This means Allah will forgive some sins committed during the time of infidelity due to the blessings of accepting Islam.
The word “some” is used because violations of human rights are not forgiven until the wronged person forgives the oppressor.

✅ [27] Root of Infidelity – Equating Prophets with Ordinary Men

The root cause of infidelity is considering Prophets as ordinary human beings.
Shaytaan became an infidel for this very reason, and many nations were destroyed because of this.
Until a person acknowledges the honour and greatness of the Prophet ﷺ, their faith cannot reach completeness.

✅ [28] Misguided Ancestral Obedience

Obedience to one's forefathers is forbidden if it contradicts the Shariah and the commands of the Holy Prophet ﷺ.
However, following the saints and righteous scholars of Islam is a part of religion.

Says Allah: “And be with the truthful” (S9:V119).
The correct identification of the True Path lies in following the pious servants of Allah.

✅ [29] Demanding Specific Miracles

This means that the miracles previously shown by the Prophets were rejected, and the infidels demanded new miracles of their own choosing, saying that the former ones failed to convince them.

Ibn-Kathir

10. Their Messengers said: “(What!) Can there be a doubt about Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth He calls you that He may forgive you of your sins and give you respite for a term appointed.” They said: “You are no more than human beings like us! You wish to turn us away from what our fathers used to worship. Then bring us a clear authority.” 11. Their Messengers said to them: “We are no more than human beings like you, but Allah bestows His grace to whom He wills of His servants. It is not ours to bring you an authority (proof) except by the permission of Allah. And in Allah (alone) let the believers put their trust.” 12. “And why should we not put our trust in Allah while He indeed has guided us in our ways And we shall certainly bear with patience all the hurt you may cause us, and in Allah (alone) let those who trust, put their trust.”

The Argument between the Prophets and the Disbelievers

Allah narrates to us the arguments that ensued between the disbelievers and their Messengers. When their nations doubted the Message of worshipping Allah alone without partners, the Messengers said,

((What!) Can there be a doubt about Allah…) about His Lordship and having the exclusive right to be worshipped alone, being the only Creator of all creatures Verily, none besides Allah is worthy of worship, alone without partners with Him. Most nations were, and still are, affirming the existence of the Creator, but they call upon intermediaries besides Him whom they think will benefit them or bring them closer to Allah. Their Messengers said to them,

(He calls you that He may forgive you of your sins) in the Hereafter,

(and give you respite for a term appointed.), in this worldly life. Allah said in other Ayat,

(Seek the forgiveness of your Lord, and turn to Him in repentance, that He may grant you good enjoyment, for a term appointed, and bestow His abounding grace to every owner of grace.) ﴿10:3﴾ However, their nations went on arguing against their prophethood, after they had to submit to the first evidence (that Allah Alone created everything).

Disbelievers reject Prophethood because the Messengers were Humans!

Their nations said,

(You are no more than human beings like us!) so why should we follow you just because you say so, even though we did not witness a miracle by your hands,

(Then bring us a clear authority.), a miracle of our choice.

(Their Messengers said to them: “We are no more than human beings like you…”) affirming that truly, they were only human being like their nations,

(but Allah bestows His grace to whom He wills of His servants.), with prophethood and messengership which is His choice,

(It is not ours to bring you an authority) according to your choice,

((except by the permission of Allah. ), after we beg Him and He provides us with a miracle,

(And in Allah (alone) let the believers put their trust.) in all their affairs. Their Messengers said to them next,

(And why should we not put our trust in Allah), after He had guided us to the best, most clear and plain way,

(And we shall certainly bear with patience all the hurt you may cause us), such as foolish actions and abusive statements,

(and in Allah (alone) let those who trust, put their trust.)

(14:10) Their Messengers said: “Can there be any doubt about Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth?[17] He invites you that He may forgive you your sins and grant you respite till an appointed term.”[18] They replied: “You are only a human being like ourselves. You seek to prevent us from serving those whom our forefathers have been serving all along. If that is so, produce a clear authority for it.”[20]

Ala-Maududi

(14:10) Their Messengers said: “Can there be any doubt about Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth?[17] He invites you that He may forgive you your sins and grant you respite till an appointed term.”[18] They replied: “You are only a human being like ourselves. You seek to prevent us from serving those whom our forefathers have been serving all along. If that is so, produce a clear authority for it.”[20]

17. The Messengers posed this question to those who rejected the message in order to bring home to them the absurdity of their stand with regard to God. For though, the mushriks of every age believed in the existence of God and acknowledged that He was the Creator of the heavens and the earth, they did not accept the message, its logical result, that He alone was entitled to their worship. That is why the Messengers asked them: Do you have any doubt about the existence of Allah?

18. In the case of individuals, the appointed term may be either the time of one’s death or the doomsday. As regards the appointed term for the rise and fall of communities, it is determined by their collective behavior. For instance, if a capable community degenerates before the expiry of its term, the assigned period is shortened and it is deposed. On the other hand, if a degenerate community changes its ways for the better, its term is extended, so much so that it may extend even to the doomsday. This same thing is implied in (Surah Ar-Raad, ayat 11): The fact is that Allah does not change a people’s lot unless they themselves change their own characteristics.

19. The disbelievers meant to imply: You are a human being like us in every respect: you eat, drink and sleep like us and have wife and children like us. You feel hungry and thirsty, and suffer from heat and cold, disease and calamities like us. In short, you have every human limitation like us, and we see nothing unusual and extraordinary in you to induct us to accept you as a Prophet and believe that God communicates with you and sends His angels to you.

(10) Their messengers said, "Can there be doubt about Allāh, Creator of the heavens and earth? He invites you that He may forgive you of your sins, and He delays you [i.e., your death] for a specified term." They said, "You are not but men like us who wish to avert us from what our fathers were worshipping. So bring us a clear authority [i.e., evidence]."
